This is an interesting article, not least because of the Princeton quote that although their early MOOCs have gone well, they are not interested in offering credit because they are concerned with how these MOOCs can give them better insights into what works well for on campus education.

Accredited prior learning or recognised prior learning for the UK. Makes me wonder why a student would bother trying to get credit, why not just go straight to the employers with a range of MOOCs relevant to that profession (unless its a professional standard required by it) just miss out the middle man. I wonder if anyone has done that yet?

Interesting to note that this academic sees the value and considers the ECTS as a means of standardising the credits so that they can be measured or equated with other HEIs using the same system. I didn't take on board how different the US model is compared to ours.

Free online courses don’t lead to college credit, at least not directly. But students can use free course content from providers like the Saylor Foundation and Education Portal to study for “challenge exams,” which may be the fastest and most inexpensive way to earn credits.
