"... an analysis of Twitter usage surrounding a German-language MOOC that could indicate future trends in technology-enhanced learning. Our research focuses on the Twitter stream accompanying the course and ask how Twitter is used and for what purposes by the heavy twitter users, by the educators / organisers / guestspeakers in the course and if tweets from “outside” get into to the stream.."

This from 2004 - although there is another theory that may be more relevant and useful, Social learning theory.  Not sure about Connectivism yet. I know its the basis of the cMOOC and that Behaviourism is the basis of the xMOOC - neither IMHO are quite right.

Sorry.

Amazing resource for studying MOOCs - one of the Godfathers of MOOCs, over 595 resources on MOOCs from 2008 to date.  I discovered, in a reviewed the IRODL Journal 'A Systematic Study of the published literature on MOOCs from 2008 -2012' (from the International Review of Open and Distance Education, 2013) and thought I would add it here but decided to check to see if it was open or not.  I then came across this post from Downes, arguing that it was incomplete, and he offered this set of articles.

Online Learning: MOOCs will never replace traditional higher ed ...

It's not that I consider MOOCs to generally be a bad idea; it's just that I think we should be more critical of them. Many are rushing into MOOCs without considering the class, societal and cultural issues inherent in their adoption ...
