Fiona Harvey's insight:

This looks interesting.  Use Facebook as the platform for delivering mobile learning to Rwanda.  Facebook as a MOOC platform?  Why not?

Completion rates mentioned here - 95% as opposed to 7% for French speaking MOOCs - why?

So far MOOCs have shown the most promise for highly motivated, naturally talented students; they’re what MIT researcher Andrew McAfee described as “diamond catchers,” at a talk on inequality put on by technology political lobby, FWD.us.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

educause article from Koller re retention in MOOCs and motivations of students.  Interesting that she equates MOOCs with textbooks (a common analogy within the moocsphere) when we don't refer to the  OU courses as textbooks.  MOOCs are not textbooks, they involve interaction and discussion and communities of learners.

Should Matt Damon teach a MOOC?

Should Matt Damon teach a MOOC? | MOOCs | Scoop.it

...  imagine how many students would tune in—or make it through the class without dropping out—if instead of bookish professors, Hollywood stars delivered the lessons.

That’s one idea under consideration by leaders of EdX, the nonprofit provider of MOOCs started by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology....

Fiona Harvey's insight:

Hilariously, we had a discussion about imagine having an actors to speak the words of academics and we came up with Sean Connery but this would work! (if they did it for nothing?) The idea came from hearing about some research on using actors in a lecture (maths) and the students preferred the actors and got higher grades. #whoknew

Fiona Harvey's insight:

The last line says it all.  'The students are already there'.

Need to look at the private companies that are offering MOOCs - SAP course has a much higher completion rate than academia.

MOOC Students Attracted Most By Course Topics -- InformationWeek | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Of those who drop out, 68% said they got too busy to continue, according to Canvas survey.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Often people will take a course and only do the parts that they are interested in - which looks like a high drop out rate (which it is) but the reasons behind that are, they got what they wanted so it was a success for them.

The Online Education Revolution Drifts Off Course

The Online Education Revolution Drifts Off Course | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Some of the largest online course providers say there will be big changes to their products in 2014.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

They mention the SJSU experiment with Udacity here but I think its important to note that the results led to a redesign and rethink of the content and delivery mechanisms - it was too hard and needed more support. But I think there is also a point to be had that a new model of learning could be adapted to the MOOC format to provide a more supportive learning experience and not just for the 'free' learners but for the on campus students as well

Pay No Attention to Supposedly Low MOOC Completion Rates - Ed Central | MOOCs | Scoop.it
The recent New York Times coverage of a University of Pennsylvania study of 16 Coursera courses has helped solidify the new conventional wisdom about MOOCs: They have terrible completion rates.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

looking at the numbers a different way, retention rates are about the same - good article and would be interesting to see mooc platforms take up this kind of analysis in their 'enrollments'.
