MOOCs are Toast or at Least Should Be

MOOCs are Toast or at Least Should Be | MOOC's (Massively Open Online Courses) | Scoop.it

"Is it time yet to declare massive open online courses or MOOCs an academic failure? The ongoing revelations about poor test results, high dropout rates and disgruntled university instructors make it clear that MOOCs are not the panacea for 21st higher education that their proponents claimed they would be.

In fact, outside of the opportunity to build new online technology platforms and develop advantageous partnerships with companies external to academia, MOOCs have turned out to be only a minor achievement in pedagogy—and an expensive one at that. Of course, the fact that many of the nation's most prestigious..." Doug Guthrie

A University's Offer of Credit for a MOOC Gets No Takers

A University's Offer of Credit for a MOOC Gets No Takers | MOOC's (Massively Open Online Courses) | Scoop.it
Colorado State University-Global Campus made the $89 offer but may have to adjust its thinking, officials say.For students, it meant a chance to get college credit on the cheap: $89, the cost of the required proctored exam, compared with the $1,050 that Colorado State charges for a comparable three-credit course. That is a big discount. Yet almost a year after Global Campus made the announcement, officials are still waiting for their first credit bargain-hunters. Not one student has taken the university up on its offer.

SPOCs, not MOOCs: Stanford teams up with edX

"...Mitchell said the university’s “initial interest” in the edX software is so Stanford can offer material to current students on its campus or to students who take Stanford classes for credit online. (In the ed tech alphabet soup, Stanford would be offering not MOOCs but what Agarwal called “SPOCs,” or Small Private Online Courses.)..." --Ry Rivard

Inside Magnus Egerstedt's MOOC | The College of Engineering at Georgia Tech

Inside Magnus Egerstedt's MOOC | The College of Engineering at Georgia Tech | MOOC's (Massively Open Online Courses) | Scoop.it

"Like other universities, Georgia Tech has embraced the promise of MOOCs, and the Institute offers them across a growing array of disciplines. But a newly hatched breed of pedagogy brings risk, and as MOOCs multiply around the country, observers express both excitement and skepticism toward them. Egerstedt is a believer, and he’s also a guinea pig. Few engineering MOOCs have sprouted thus far. There is no blueprint for this course, Control of Mobile Robots, and no backup plan when Egerstedt’s recording sessions, like the one with the silver cases, do not go quite as expected..." --Lyndsey Lewis

What Professors Can Learn From 'Hard Core' MOOC Students

What Professors Can Learn From 'Hard Core' MOOC Students | MOOC's (Massively Open Online Courses) | Scoop.it
People who have taken dozens of massive open online courses share their advice for those teaching them.

"Most are driven mainly by curiosity rather than the desire to show off their certificates to any potential employer, and none has paid for a verified certificate."

"Clarity and organization are key."

"Professors are the stars."

"Text still matters."

"Passion matters most."

'Mr. Seiter agrees that it as possible to learn as much online as in a traditional course, but that to do so usually requires doing optional readings, which most MOOCers skip."

Markus Lauer- ""If you want to become an expert in the field," he says, "I think you need the book."

Interesting view from Hard Core MOOCers...as much as it may be viewed that "professors are the stars" not sure I like that concept..the subject should be the star and the students should be at the centre.
