Sparks & Co's insight:

Great idea from the science centre of Toulouse to connect researcher with teenagers via talks on Hangout. Something we would definitely want to do for our Horizon 2020 projects!

As academic blogging becomes mainstream, science communication must facilitate depth and breadth in online discourse. | European science communication | Scoop.it

Having recently attended a conference session on the role of online forums for science communication, Alan Cann reflects on the extent to which academic blogging is currently embedded in academic practice. Blogs are still the centre of serious online academic communication but there is still a long way to go until the Republic of Blogs is established and academic blogging moves from being a spare time activity to a mainstream

L'ANR recale 90% des projets scientifiques

L'ANR recale 90% des projets scientifiques | European science communication | Scoop.it

Sparks & Co's insight:

In times where the French Research funding agency (Agence National de la Recherche) turns down 90% of research proposal, maybe it is time for the French labs to look towards European funding? If you consider joining European projects, our team will be delighted to join you to ensure your project a good and efficient communication and dissemination strategy.

The top 50 science stars of Twitter and why they do it

The top 50 science stars of Twitter and why they do it | European science communication | Scoop.it

Genomicist Neil Hall sparked an online tempest this summer by proposing a “Kardashian Index,” or K-index—a comparison of a scientist’s number of Twitter followers with their citations. Scientists with a high score on the index, named after the reality TV star Kim Kardashian, one of the most popular celebrities on the social media platform, should “get off Twitter” and write more papers, suggested Hall, who works at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom..

Sparks & Co's insight:

If you were wondering why scientists are using Twitter, you should have asked the top 50 most followed ones!

Crowdfunding Platform for Scientific Research: Experiment.com

Crowdfunding Platform for Scientific Research: Experiment.com | European science communication | Scoop.it
Our mission is to fund science that moves us forward.

As a society, we are in a position to study, learn, and innovate more than ever before. Yet there is one major bottleneck: funding. In recent years, it's become increasingly difficult for new ideas to get off the ground, especially the innovative and high-risk ideas with the biggest impact.

Since 2010, 80% of principal investigators spend more time writing grant proposals and 67% are struggling with less funding. 'Big science' has become synonymous with 'budget cuts'.

This is about our ability to invest in our future. This is about Science for the people, by the people.

Sparks & Co's insight:

Experiment.com is a new crowdfunding platform for research projects. These platforms could be great alternatives to funding shortages around the world for research purposes, but they imply a fine use of communication towards backers.

The art of explaining science.. and why it's so hard to do

The art of explaining science.. and why it's so hard to do | European science communication | Scoop.it

Explaining science is something reporters, especially science reporters, must do. But most of us are not scientists. Instead, we rely on the type of scientist who is good at telling stories, good at translating what happens in the lab to people who may not have been around an Erlenmeyer flask since high school. So what makes a scientist a good communicator? It turns out the scientific community has become more interested in figuring that out.

Sparks & Co's insight:

Communicating science actually requires expertise, as this very interesting podcast suggests it. This is why our science communicators join European research projects to help them communicate about their work.
