When it comes to children, they can be quite persuasive in getting what they want and when they want it. Once you look into their angelic eyes, you're a goner.

It's nice to see discussion of literacy with middle school students. So much is focused on elementary that we often forget to keep going.

Now that I've started using backchannel communication in my seminars and classes, I really miss it when it's not available.
Ken Morrison's comment,

I have used Twitter in a few classes. Students say they like it, but I fail to use it more often. It worked great as a break when I had two-hour classes. I would tell students to tweet about something new that they learned in the last hour and then take a break and/or questions. I would use break time to review the tweets via the common hashtag. We could start the next hour with a student-generated review and Q/A session. I was happy with the results, solid instruction & unscientific 'feeling' of the classroom.

The other day, I was discussing with someone the dangers of using social media without rules. Since Millennials are the only generation that did not have to go through their formative years without a computer, teaching them the basics is now vital.
Jim Dougherty shares a great infographic on his blog. It is full of eye-opening stats on Facebook usage. For example, do you know that 55% of teens have given out personal information to someone they don’t know?

I hope that flashcards are not all our students use the ipad/iphone for, but if these apps help them learn, really learn the facts they need to know, then here are a few apps to try.

Mixed feelings on this one ... nice to be "green," but are we trading tactile experience for more screen time?
Holland Bass's comment,
May 7, 3:55 AM
I like the idea of using an iPad for flashcards, but overall I don't think it is a good idea. Looking too long at a screen can harm your eyes, so the old notecards are still favourable for me.
