ONLINE FIRST: Data Point to Less Radiation for Older Breast Cancer Patients

ONLINE FIRST: Data Point to Less Radiation for Older Breast Cancer Patients | Modern Physics Projects | Scoop.it

"Less is better than more” seemed to be the theme of the studies selected by the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBS) for a news conference at its Annual Meeting, held in Chicago earlier this month.

Researchers reported that:

Postmenopausal women aged 55 to 75 with early-stage breast cancer can be safely treated with breast-conservative surgery without postoperative radiation therapy;Women who undergo mastectomy for breast cancer and choose prophylactic mastectomy for the contralateral breast have approximately double the risk of surgical complications; andRoutine imaging studies conducted less than a year after a benign breast biopsy are an unnecessary drain on health care dollars. I am not surprised that at ASBS (the American Society of Breast Surgeons) annual meeting the less is more approach was a dominating theme. There seems to be a consensus among many looking at current our breast cancer treatments and discovering we have been in an environment of overtreating and doing so much more when less is all that is needed. I was at an interesting lecture last weekend where the doctor spoke about how we tend to add more to treatment but we don't think of taking away. The more you do the more risk of side effects and complications and more is not necessarily better.
