Why is technology essential in modern day design?
Technology progresses further and further every day. It has become an integral factor driving our constantly changing and improving world. Without software models, design programs and aids, many of the amazing structures you see around you would simply not be possible.
The year is 1173, Pisa, Italy. Construction has begun on the, then called, Tower of Pisa. At an impressive 185 feet tall and constructed entirely of white marble, it is one of the most impressive structures in Europe by medieval standards. White marble is a particularly heavy material and midway through construction the project ran into difficulties. Engineers made frantic adjustments but nothing could be done to stop the tower from gaining its new name; The Leaning Tower of Pisa.
As a result of these difficulties The Leaning Tower of Pisa is 17 feet away from vertical at the top and slightly curved throughout. This is because the designers and engineers of the day did not understand how the mechanics of the ground would react to such a vast weight and the foundations were insufficient to support the structure.
In contrast the modern world has many impressive structures such as The Shard in London. At a staggering 1016 feet tall it is easily the tallest building in London and stands in exactly the manner that was intended. Technology is the reason that a building almost 6 times the height of The Leaning Tower of Pisa is possible.
Technology gives you a greater understanding and improved visualisation of all aspects of any project. This can be from the mechanics of the structure or ground, to how the public will move and interact with it. This provides you with a huge amount of information before you have even set foot on the site. As The Leaning Tower of Pisa proves, it is extremely difficult to implement changes once construction is underway and as such planning is the most vital stage of any project. Technology provides you with the tools to complete this process properly and effectively.
Oasys Software are providing and constantly improving upon the tools you need for your project to succeed. Established in 1976 they have provided high quality software and support for a great deal of projects and they will continue to be at the forefront of the industry for many years to come.
If the medieval engineers had access to these tools it is impossible to say how The Leaning Tower of Pisa would look. However, it is fair to assume it would definitely stand up straight and unlike the architect of the tower, Arup and Oasys Software are proud to have their name associated with the most iconic structures of our age.
