Sawdust Caesars

Sawdust Caesars | Mod Scene Weekly | Scoop.it

Whilst reading Tony Beesley’s comprehensive account of the development and subsequent revivals and later rebirths of the cult of Mod, my interest was reawakened and it has invigorated me to revisit my time as a teenager of fifteen, who, discovering Modernism, was set on the path of enlightenment.

The title of the book is taken from the sentencing speech of a Margate magistrate in 1964, his remarks were thus - “It is not likely that the air of this town has ever been polluted by the hordes of hooligans, male and female, such as we have seen this weekend. These long haired, mentally unstable, petty little hoodlums. These Sawdust Caesars, who can only find courage like rats hunting in packs, came to Margate with the avowed intent on interfering with the life and properties of its inhabitants.” Magistrate Dr. George Simpson

Oscar-Winning Director to Helm Upcoming Stax Records Film ‘Respect Yourself’

Oscar-Winning Director to Helm Upcoming Stax Records Film ‘Respect Yourself’ | Mod Scene Weekly | Scoop.it

The tale of Stax Records, the trailblazing label that launched Otis Redding’s career and released hits like Eddie Floyd’s “Knock on Wood,” is eyeing the big screen and Broadway.

Evergreen Media Group, the company behind hit horror film The Conjuring, has inked a deal with author Robert Gordon to adapt his book Respect Yourself into both a film and jukebox musical. Morgan Neville, coming off his Academy Award win for the documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, is onboard to produce the film. (Evergreen struck a separate deal with Rondor Music to option publishing rights to such hits as Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” and Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man,” and filed suit to stop a competing musical).

John Mayall is a legend. His iconic band, the Bluesbreakers, also happens to be the launching pad for some of the world’s most famous music makers, like Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood (of Fleetwood Mac) and Mick Taylor (of the Rolling Stones). And at 82 he’s still a creative force.

Bruce Cockburn's 1968: Electrocution to Revolution - PopMatters

Bruce Cockburn's 1968: Electrocution to Revolution - PopMatters | Mod Scene Weekly | Scoop.it

It was a hot Ottawa summer day, 1968. A 23-year-old Canadian musician named Bruce Cockburn was hanging out at the Somerset Asylum, watching a movie being filmed which co-starred his poet friend and occasional songwriting partner, Penelope Schafer.

It wasn’t a real asylum. That was merely the nickname given to the old house on historic, artsy Somerset Street where Penelope (she went by her first name only) lived with her brain research scientist husband, Ted Schafer. The house received its alias due to the colorful cast of characters it attracted and the crazy things that would happen there.

Smokey Robinson opens up about illustrious career - New York Post | Mod Scene Weekly | Scoop.it

Few people in modern music have been as successful and influential on both the creative and business sides of the industry as Smokey Robinson.

The chief singer and songwriter for the Miracles, Robinson, 74, led the group to 26 Top 40 hits in the ’60s. But Robinson was also a pivotal player at Motown Records, where he officially served as vice president for 18 years (1972-1990).

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE: THE MOTOWN MINI - Classic Motown

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE: THE MOTOWN MINI - Classic Motown | Mod Scene Weekly | Scoop.it

Motown Records enjoyed a prosperous 1968 in Britain, its strongest market outside the US.  The hit factory had opened the year with Top 10 UK chart ratings for the Four Tops’ “Walk Away Renee,” and closed it with an eight-week Top 10 run for the Isley Brothers’ “This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You),” the reissue of a single first released two years earlier.  In addition, “Greatest Hits” by the Tops and Diana Ross & the Supremes were among the country’s best-selling albums in ’68.

To keep up the momentum into 1969, EMI launched a competition for music fans:  “Buy a new release Tamla album, Win a Motown Mini.”   The car came with radio and tape machine, and there were 20 consolation prizes of five Tamla-Motown albums of the winners’ choice.  Contestants received an entry form when they bought one (or more!) of the company’s January and February releases, which included titles by the Four Tops, The Marvelettes, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & the Supremes, and Marvin Gaye.  The competition called for contestants to compile a 12-track Motown Chartbusters LP from a choice of 20 tracks.
