Chico Hamilton (1921-2013) - A Modernist

Chico Hamilton (1921-2013) - A Modernist | Mod Scene Weekly | Scoop.it

Social media delivered the news that Forestorn "Chico" Hamilton passed away at the age of 92. The words legend and great are far too often abused these days, but Hamilton was both. As an innovative percussionist and bandleader, he was a somewhat singular modern American musician. I know people that have both studied and worked with him, so I can comfortably claim that he was also a true personality. For those interested in digging deep, I highly recommend listening to and reading his contribution to the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Project here.

Mod Male: Top 10 Modern Dance Jazz Songs

Mod Male: Top 10 Modern Dance Jazz Songs | Mod Scene Weekly | Scoop.it

I dig jazz as much as they next guy with great musical tastes! My favorite styles of jazz, as you can probably guess, are the different schools that evolved throughout the mid-20th century. Lots of jazz styles from cool jazz, soul jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, latin jazz, and heck, even free jazz.

But I'm not here today to get into those sounds because you can get better info on sites like this and this. Instead, I want to get into more current music. A short while ago, I delved into more contemporary jazz bands to help broaden the ol' DJ range and I found some great stuff going on. There were bands taking the sounds of the '50s and '60s, and either adding in a mix of '90s acid jazz or throwing in new dance beats and instrumentation. Many times, I heard the term 'nu-jazz' tossed here and there. Call it what you like, so long as you can dance to it!

The Art of Jazz – David Stone Martin

The Art of Jazz – David Stone Martin | Mod Scene Weekly | Scoop.it
Now as you may have gathered, here at VoEA we are big fans of the format that is vinyl records. There are many reasons that we won’t go into today but one of them is definitely the cover art. Not all vinyl records have fantastic cover art, in fact many don’t, but when it is done well the size of the 12” x 12” album cover is an almost perfect medium to display what the artist had in mind. One of the best known jazz record cover artists is David Stone Martin (commonly known as DSM) and here we take a look at his work and career as one of the pioneers of the art form

Ed Blackwell Brilliant Actions

Ed Blackwell Brilliant Actions | Mod Scene Weekly | Scoop.it

Ed Blackwell was an American jazz drummer born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is well known for his extensive, influential work with Ornette Coleman.

Blackwell's early career began in New Orleans in the 1950s. He played in a bebop quintet that included pianist Ellis Marsalis and clarinetist Alvin Batiste. There was also a brief stint touring with Ray Charles. The second line parade music of New Orleans greatly influenced Blackwell's drumming style and could be heard in his playing throughout his career.

I believe that it is true that the second line parade music of new orleans  influenced blackwells drumming.Even tho he was influenced by that his style of drumming is very unique..

Pro:Blackwells music is definately influential to others.this is one way he show emotion to the fans

Cons:I dont believe he was greatly influence by the second line parade music of new orleans bc his style is just a very unique way to express music itself
