Vocation Nation: Why Today's Students Are Choosing Technical Training - Online College.org | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Many students are turning to the technical training of vocational school, an option that allows them to learn hands-on, in-demand skills.
Ralph Springett's insight:

Instead of unschooling try uncolleging. Stay in the education system but learn something that is often immediately useful. Many of these course are highly mobile.

I learned trade cookery - and I use that skill every day to the delight of my family.

Bill Gates on Tablet Innovation, Apple and Windows

Bill Gates on Tablet Innovation, Apple and Windows | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
"We gotta ask you about all these tablets and PCs," Squawk Box co-anchor Joe Kernen said to Microsoft chairman Bill Gates Monday morning.

This compatibility and the amalgamation of devices is going to make products harder to distinguish between what were once traditional tablets and PCs, Gates says.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Whether you run a laptop - tablet/phone combo or use Surface the point is clear. The devices that are used for browsing are light and portable, those for creation are larger and need a functional keyboard.

Surface brings the two closer together whereas Apple makes the difference  clear. You choose.

Essay suggests that MOOCs are losing their original worthy goals | Inside Higher Ed | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

The MOOC spirit has been eroded by institutions and individuals who see an easy way to sound (or just seem) tech-online savvy. MOOCs are being used by many institutions to avoid actually having to discuss issues like ownership of curriculum, scalability and strategic online growth.

Ralph Springett's insight:

And the learners are the pawns in the system.

Ronald Barnett offers an imaginative approach to the idea of the university: ‘feasible utopias’ that open up possibilities for renewal beyond the dominant ideas of the market
Ralph Springett's insight:

The key point is that we can see a university that does not derive from self-interest but is prompted by concerns of a wider kind.

Which is nice, except the cynic would say that money governs education.

Half an Hour: Assessment in MOOCs

Half an Hour: Assessment in MOOCs | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

One option is to bypass grading entirely, and let a person's outcomes stand on their own as evidence of accomplishment in the course. this is the objective of portfolio-based courses, more common in the arts and writing, but also increasingly popular in the sciences, and especially design, engineering and computing.

Ralph Springett's insight:

There is an obvious option that seems to be missed here. Students pay assessment fees and complete the 'internal' assessments for the course. They are then marked alongside traditionally taught students' assessments. No money-back guarantee though.

Perhaps it is about knowing where you are going as an organisation. There will be some Colleges that focus on more traditinal delivery - there will alsways be a market for that, particulalry for youth learners.
