World Education University: MOOC on Demand | University Business Magazine | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Because WEU implements an independent study model, students can enroll, start, and complete courses at any time. Students can also submit transcripts from other institutions, provided they are notarized and translated into english by a third party institution such as the Association of International Credit Evaluators. The registrar’s office will then review the transcripts on a case-by-case basis. Hines says they are pretty open to accepting credits from other schools, as long as the institutions’ standards align with WEU’s. WEU grants degrees and certificates and is free, which Hines says sets them apart from other players in the world of MOOCs.

Ralph Springett's insight:

The certification and recognition of learning must be central to online courses if learners wish to use their qualification for getting work.

are perhaps eventually realizing that the arts are important to grow and develop ? are they perhaps remembering the importance of Schools of Art such as they were in '400 and '500 century in Europe, where artists were on par with the scientists, working , arguing and planning together. Artists were traveling on foot and horseback miles and miles to go to adorn palaces and churches. They where craftsmen in high demand , maybe not always wise, no, but as the doctors cared for the body, they cared for the soul.

From vibrant communities on social media to inventive lessons using video conferencing, Joe Dale explores how languages teachers have embraced technology in the classroom
Ralph Springett's insight:

"The issue now is the widening gap between those who pro-actively use technology to promote creativity and collaboration, and those who only tick the ICT box with the same old 'drill and kill' websites (that focus on excessive repetition of simple, isolated skills) and MS Office".

Students learn and understand more when they have specific learning goals for reading, can frequently test their understanding in meaningful ways, can anchor new information to what they already know and can choose their learning path. BioBook is the first eText that helps students do all of this. BioBook is cloud-based and accessible from any device with an HTML5-compliant browser. Its node-based framework lets teachers choose and update what content, multimedia, and self-assessments their students experience.

Ralph Springett's insight:

They have got the right idea but the whole thing is internet dependent. For a well-off American that might be okay, but for many learners a mix of dependence and independence is better.

Google announced a major push to get Android apps to schools with a new version of its app store called Google Play for Education.

If Apple and Google actually cared about learners (rather than profits) they would work together to deliver education solutions. Instead they force a choice and devide the learning community. It's the American dream?

The 7 Characteristics of Teachers Who Use Technology Effectively ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

What is really interesting in this graphic is that all of these 7 habits are also the same features we find in people with " growth mindset ". If you still remember the comparison we have made between growth and fixed mindsets  and we said that teachers with the growth mindset are more open to embrace change, take risks, persist in the face of setbacks, see effort as the path for mastery , and find lessons and inspiration in the success of others.

Ralph Springett's insight:

I like this - and agree in particular with "they actively care"

Smartphone and tablet adoption in American Teens | Pew Internet & American Life Project | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Smartphone adoption among American teens has increased substantially and mobile access to the internet is pervasive. One in four teens are “cell-mostly” internet users, who say they mostly go online using their phone and not using some other device such as a desktop or laptop computer. These are among the new findings from a nationally representative survey of 802 teens ages 12-17 and their parents which shows that:

So with most access to the internet happening through smartphones what is happening to teens' learning styles. What effect might this have on concentration spans?

Should you buy a tablet or hybrid laptop? AMD says it’s a no-brainer | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Standalone tablets are so old school -- a senior executive from chipmaker AMD thinks that hybrid laptops are the way forward.
Ralph Springett's insight:

What is really being said here is that cloud computing is not going to be the preferred way of creating content. The thing about tablets is they lack the processing power to create content (keyboards can be attached). So, the choices are to use cloud services or use on-board firepower.

Demonstrating compliance though evidence can apply to individual learners. What is needed is learning goals to set the evidence against, and a credible authority to authenticate compliance.

Connecting Your Institution’s Achievements to Demonstrate a Culture of Compliance," by Susan Paraska, director of institutional effectiveness at Kennesaw State University, presents a method for integrating strategic plan implementation and the planning requirements of the accreditation cycle using project management tools.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Demonstrating compliance though evidence can apply to individual learners. What is needed is learning goals to set the evidence against, and a credible authority to authenticate compliance.

In business this is provided by auditsand business outcomes - for learners there is only badging.

Learners need an accrediting agency they can submit their portfolios to in order to gain recognition of their skills and knowledge. But first they need a   framwork of compliance standards.

Jussi Luukkonen's comment, May 19, 2013 9:02 PM
I think that the best way to go forward is to look at these things through Goldratt's Theory of Constraints. By talking about the project management without understanding what constraints the organisations have is in most cases waste of time. There is horse-loads of research about project management and the traditional PM methods just don't work anymore. TOC can give tools to sort out these and many more problems.
