CEO Talk: Should We Build a Mobile App or Mobile Website? | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

The rate of Android and iOS device adoption among international users has out-paced the 1980s PC revolution, the 1990s Internet boom, and the social networking craze of the ‘aughts, according to [research], which reported the rate of smartphone adoption to be 10 times that of what we might now perceive as the positively glacial pace of early personal computer adoption.

So how do you harness one the greatest opportunities of our decade? Well, you start by picking the right development path, of course!

iPads will replace books, classrooms and, in some ways, teachers. A principal of the Steve Jobs school says in seven years their model will be totally normal.
Ralph Springett's insight:

This is my take-home: "children will learn by calling up a learning app on their iPad — which will be turned into a sort of interactive, multimedia schoolbook".

My point is that the textbook can now have the teacher inside it.

Blended, Online Learning and Distance Education

Blended, Online Learning and Distance Education | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Social networking offers teachers and learners exciting opportunities to communicate. Web 2.0 and its synchronous communications platforms provide new avenues for teachers to deliver curriculum and facilitate learning. Further, they provide new avenues for students to engage and intensify their own learning. Being able to chat in real-time with a teacher, usually via face-to-face discussions, is something that many students studying in on-campus (or day) mode take for granted, and is something that distance or off-campus students are generally unable to experience.

Ralph Springett's insight:

But what about risks? Fine when everything is fine but it can get out of control because you are not in control.

Gazing Through Mud: The Campus and You in 50 Years

Gazing Through Mud: The Campus and You in 50 Years | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

As we know, the higher education landscape is changing so rapidly that it’s difficult to envision the future even two or three years from now. Nonetheless, I accepted the challenge, secure in the knowledge that no matter how far I missed the mark, no one would remember (and I won’t be around even if they do).

That 50 years was proposed as the horizon actually seems appropriate, as that’s the length of time it takes for higher education to fully accept and place new ideas into use, according to former Teachers College president Arthur Levine.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Seems a reasonable projection. I wonder how important open content will be and the ability of learners to demonstrate competence independently from institutions. Seems like something the workforce learners will evolve.

Learnlets » Defining Mobile

Learnlets » Defining Mobile | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

At the recent Guild mLearnCon mobile learning event, I had a thought that seems to answer a long time debate.  The debate centers on the definition of a mobile device.  The feature/smart phone is obviously a candidate, and tablets seem pretty clearly included too, but the ongoing issue has been whether a laptop counts. And I may have finally discovered a way of looking at it that answers the question.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Define the device in terms of the learner. Mobility is the ability to learn where the learner is. If this is by textbook then it fits the definition. If the textbook is big and the learner is travelling there may be a problem, if it is replaced by a tablet and the battery gives out and the learner is in remote Africa then the textbook remains the mobile solution.

So by including the learning we find mobile is about being able to learn. A textbook may not support the media best suited to learning. A phone may not have a big enough screen, a laptop may provide the right keyboard for a particular task. But they are all mobile for particular learing situations. Why try to define them any other way? What is the purpose of your discussion?

Define the device in terms of the learner, the learner's situation: their needs and resources. Don't define a mobile learning device by the size of the screen but by the suitability of the screen for the learner's needs.
