What is an Acceptable Passing Test Score for eLearning Courses? - eLearning Brothers

What is an Acceptable Passing Test Score for eLearning Courses? - eLearning Brothers | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
So how do we test knowledge? Usually in eLearning courses, we measure our learner’s progress using knowledge checks, quizzes, or some type of tests.
Ralph Springett's insight:

The comment 'it depends' is really the salient point. Examples of the variables include: are you testing knowledge which requires instant recall in the field, or is it something that would normally be looked up? Is the test a portion of the total knowledge or everything taught? Is the course competence based - what is your agreed definition of competence? Is the test summative for the purpose of accreditation, of formative to move to the next section of learning?

This complexity is why assessment is best guided by principles and supported by a rubric so the SME, accreditors and designers have some common ground on which to base their decisions.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Interesting reading. It may be the role of the teacher is more to recognise the type of instruction required, rather than simply move towards self directed learning. In my experience many learners still need to learn how to learn - self motivation remains a long way off, with learning often driven by fairly ugly realities such as fear of being uneducated or there having no alternatives (like a job).

That said there is a need for teachers to understand this learning styles spectrum so they can provide for the wide range of needs learners present with.

NAP Members Area: Antonio Moreira Teixeira's blog: The Persistence of (Distance) Learning

NAP Members Area: Antonio Moreira Teixeira's blog: The Persistence of (Distance) Learning | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

There has been a dramatic shift in the last decade. Knowledge is no longer the preserve of the elite organisations, and has been slipping through their fingers for some time. It is now possible to find content on just about any subject under the sun, simply by searching and finding it on the Web

Ralph Springett's insight:

Distance education may be on the out. Whether institutions continue to provide distance education will depend on viable economic models. Distance learning, however, will continue to grow simply because of the availability of information through the Web.

Three Ways to Shift Instructional Practices to Meet the Needs of 21st-Century Learners

Three Ways to Shift Instructional Practices to Meet the Needs of 21st-Century Learners | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

With our student populations becoming more and more non-traditional, our pedagogy could probably use a little dusting off and updating. In fact, let’s start with shifting from talking about pedagogy, technically the instruction of children, to andragogy, the teaching strategies that address needs of adult learners.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Asking a lot of the teacher but perhaps that is part of the challenge. As learning blends into life so does the teaching of a course.

Designing Offline-First Web Apps

Designing Offline-First Web Apps | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
We assume our users are like us—with the latest devices, the most recent software, and the fastest connections. And while we may maintain a veritable zoo of older devices and browsers for testing, we spend most of our time building from the comfort of our modern, always-online desktop devices. But what happens when our users descend into the subway, board a plane, go to live in the country, or just happen to find themselves in the wrong corner of the room? The truth is, offline is a fact of life
Ralph Springett's insight:

This is where we should be going with Apps - Offline should not be treated with error messages.
