How long before we can say this thinking is embedded?

Study shows faculty members remain skeptical of digital course materials and generally unfamiliar with open educational resources.
Ralph Springett's insight:

Quality trumps cost. So, if perceived quality of online/digital resources is poor this article argues that the preference is to go traditional.

Perhaps a simplistic view if not including accessibility in the discussion. Survey commissioned by College Bookstore Association.

A 2016 Look at the Future of Online Learning - Part 1 | teachonline.ca

A 2016 Look at the Future of Online Learning - Part 1 | teachonline.ca | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Online learning is no longer seen as novel or innovative – it is one of the tools available for teaching and learning and is in widespread use

Ralph Springett's insight:

An article worth reading - I wonder, though, if the view fails to recognise the struggle lower socio-economic groups have with access. Devices and connectivity underpin the thinking here, yet in my experience I see learners most in need struggling to afford connection costs. Yes they can come to the institution or go to a library but that is not anywhere, anytime.

A recent report shows the potential for learning analytics in higher education, says Jisc chief executive Paul Feldman
Ralph Springett's insight:

In perfect world - yes. The challenge in the sector is that the cost of introducing and supporting integrated analytics systems impacts on the budget for teaching resources. For smaller institutions the costs may outweigh the benefits. Fortunately the technology continues to develop - things are likey to be different again in five years.

Highlighting “leadership” is one of the most notable changes. The 2016 NETP devotes an entire section to leadership and to “creating a culture and conditions for innovation and change.

Ralph Springett's insight:

The priority of leadership applies equally  in New Zealand. Leadership and collaboration are required to apply, support and measure our education technology initiatives. Parallel with the Productivity Commission's 'review and advise' report due in 2017, the sector needs to accept the mission-critical nature of Ed Tech and support emerging leaders.

This article is based on Ausubel's theory and explains how to apply it in eLearning, by creating engaging courses and making them memorable.

The same approach is often taken when writing fiction: say what happened up front, support the reader to apply what they know, let  the reader make connections (show, not tell), and confirm at the end (ahh, satisfaction)

Education Needs Long-Term Technology Strategy - EdBlog

Education Needs Long-Term Technology Strategy - EdBlog | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
The strategy that will drive the greatest success in education is one where technology plays a vital and huge role along with great teaching.
Ralph Springett's insight:
I can't agree that standardisation of education technologies is a way forward. But, I do agree that good planning at institutional level is critical. Appropriate platforms, good help and support, and a focus on teaching with technology support.
It is not about standardisation, it is about time - and time is money. Tutors need more time to search and find the right OER and then to edit the content for their situation. Tutors need time to learn how to use new tools and investigate emerging technologies. If there i could fix one thing it would be the time we give to tutors to plan and execute their teaching.

How Personal APIs Let Students Design Their University (EdSurge News)

I sat at a table with faculty, technologists, CIOs, startup founders and students, all gathered under one roof to tackle the question: How might we use application program interfaces (APIs) to empower students and faculty members to have voice, agency and digital literacy in their institutions? W
Ralph Springett's insight:
Is drag and drop the logical step towards a student designed interface? Allowing students to build their own home page from elements such as timetables, course notifications, social media feeds and events is technically straight-forward - the organisational strategy to go there is the challenge.

Unlocking the digital potential of graduates: addressing the ‘employability gap’ through technology | Jisc

Unlocking the digital potential of graduates: addressing the ‘employability gap’ through technology | Jisc | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
It’s in the news at the moment: students struggling to find work, struggling to even afford to attend colleges or universities, universities considering refunding fees if their graduates can’t find work, questions about the value of a university education and the value for money that courses offer.
Ralph Springett's insight:

As well as providing benefits to learners there is an edge in a competitive market in embedding digital competencies in learning and teaching. So why are we not doing more of this? Is it about the skill-set of our tutors and lecturers?
