The State of MOOCs: An EdTech Researcher Retrospective

The State of MOOCs: An EdTech Researcher Retrospective | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Looking back over EdTech Researcher's posts about the history, development, and contemporary state of Massive Open Online Courses.
Ralph Springett's insight:

Although supportive of the creation of 'talking textbooks' the author is hesitant to suggest e-courses will ever have the quality assurance of campus-based delivery. So, for the learner, little changes.

For-Profit Colleges and Higher Education Policy Increase Inequality - US News | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Author Suzanne Mettler says politics is failing higher education. "What’s very tragic to me is that now so much of that federal student aid money is going to the for-profit colleges"  The vast majority of their students borrow to attend. Their graduation rates are very poor.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Federal student aid going to for-profit institutions. Outcome: poor graduation rates and debt for the low socio-economic group. Rubbish system.

What’s Our Vision for the Future of Learning?

What’s Our Vision for the Future of Learning? | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Author David Price writes: "If schools are coming into direct competition with the learning opportunities available in the informal social space, it has to be said that this is a pressure, which barely registers within the political discourse. Indeed, the gaping hole in the middle of the public debate on schooling is that we can’t even agree on what schools are actually for."
Ralph Springett's insight:

"I don't know new things - I do new things with what I know"

One way of working out what your school is for is to look at the attributes you seek to instil in your graduates.

Interestingly, a new generation of attributes is emerging. The previous generation's emphasis on 'knowing' or 'having [ x ] skills' is being replaced by capability statements like 'innovative, creative, adaptable".

MOOCs – Panacea or benevolent curse? - University World News

MOOCs – Panacea or benevolent curse? - University World News | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Online university education programmes, and massive open online courses – MOOCs – in particular, may be considered disruptive technological developments with the potential to be useful in the struggle to address the challenges of higher education in the 21st century. But this will only be realised if we avoid the twin evils of cynicism and evangelism.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Good points here. Once mature MOOCs are likely to contribute, rather then resolve the current issue of inequality and profit-driven education. Collaboration may be the answer but is it realistic to ask capitalism to let this one slide by?

Universities and employability – Preparing for the demands of work - University World News

Universities and employability – Preparing for the demands of work - University World News | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Around the world the number of graduates is growing, yet the ‘skills mismatch’ is also rising. A degree is no longer a guarantee of a good job, and fingers are being pointed at universities for failing to better prepare students for the real world and the expectations of employers.

Ralph Springett's insight:

It is expensive to provide work experience in a training environment. That is the practice has fallen away. The business of education makes these decisions, not the teachers or learners.
