MOOCs Morphing Into a Path for College Preparation - Higher Education

MOOCs Morphing Into a Path for College Preparation - Higher Education | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

The focus is on incorporating existing MOOCs and newly created MOOCs—covering basic intro level and general education requirements—into the universities’ offerings, flipping the classrooms at public institutions, using MOOCs as a catalyst for collaboration on teaching and learning, and enhancing access to credit-bearing programs.

Ralph Springett's insight:

This is the financial model - funnel the students in. I have no problem with that.

5 Lessons Education Research Taught Us In 2014

5 Lessons Education Research Taught Us In 2014 | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Lessons from a handful of the most-viewed papers from the American Educational Research Association last year.
Ralph Springett's insight:

Ouch - short courses have expanded  and this is the learner outcome. Maybe it is the difference between getting a job or not.

"Individuals who earned short-term certificates (programs that last anywhere between a few weeks and a few months) were no more likely to see higher wages or better chances of employment than those who earned no credentials at all." (Lesson 3).

Do You Have An App Strategy For Your eLearning Programs - eLearning Industry

Do You Have An App Strategy For Your eLearning Programs - eLearning Industry | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Smartphones have become ubiquitous and it is extremely critical for the elearning industry to have an app strategy for their curriculum.
Ralph Springett's insight:

Not convinced 'extremely critical' and 'vital' are the sorts of advice we should be dispensing or listening too. This article makes some good points, but misses the use of an app as a gateway and pathway tool.

Apps which provide access to support, library services, study spaces and social media networks may be what some students need.

Apps can be a good idea but lets be clear about the purpose before we say it is imperative to have the technology.

Ralph Springett's insight:

I agree on most fronts. I agree we have not even started in terms of true mobile delivery. Secondly, we will not get a quantum shift because of the massive shift required. The change required in education infrastructure, and pedagogy and design is fundamental and expensive. Finally, the ones who can afford it, the ivy league for example, are not the ones who need it.

Business is more likely to lead the mobile learning age.

Waterfall Learning vs Agile Learning

Waterfall Learning vs Agile Learning | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
The advent of software development caused a great demand for project management strategies and tools. At first the most famous approach to Project Management (or PM) was called Waterfall development, which was just perfect for industrial projects of big dimensions, but that was not dynamic enough for the quickly growing economy of the Internet era.
Ralph Springett's insight:

Agile development has potential to influence a number of courses even if the team driving development is small. The difference is one of keeping may balls in the air rather than running the full length of the field with the ball in hand.

Faculty’s Role in Higher Education Innovation

Faculty’s Role in Higher Education Innovation | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
In fall 2014, we partnered with FTI to conduct a research study to gather data from over 4,000 U.S. higher education faculty to better understand influences on faculty's willingness to learn about new pedagogies especially courseware and other innovations,
incorporate new ideas in their work, and share new ideas regarding teaching and learning with peers and campus leaders.
Ralph Springett's insight:

Although interested and active, in my experience faculty are often hamstrung by a lack of resources and technical capability. A key element in implementation is good education technology support and great relationships between that support and the faculty.

Then we move from thinking about it to making it happen.

The digital badge buzz got started when U. S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan called them “a game-changing strategy” that could trigger “a quantum leap forward in education reform.” Badges?

I am interested in how badges might allow a learner to track their progress in literacy and numeracy when these skills are embedded in the curriculum.

ICT in Education

ICT in Education | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
This study collected and benchmarked information from 31 European countries (EU27, HR, ICE, NO and TR) on the access, use, competence and attitudes of students and teachers regarding ICT in schools.
Ralph Springett's insight:

For those wishing to compare across the Atlantic. Interesting to note that while most teachers now use ICT in some way for lesson preparation, there has been no rise in the level of teachers using ICT for more than 25% of their lessons.

It seems traditional preparation methods remain the most practical for many lessons.

Lack of home internet access hinders students with school-provided iPads | eSchool News | eSchool News | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
School officials are trying to find ways to give internet access to families with school-provided devices, but no at-home access.
Ralph Springett's insight:

We have heard this before. Solutions include providing equivalent deliveries: digital, traditional, hearing impaired, visually impaired and so on...

It is also possible to download information (such as textbooks) to the device so it is functional offline.

The point being that mobile eLearning is not online learning. Learner needs suffer as learners have the least voice and our system continues to be driven by financial needs of corporates and dated pedagogy (as opposed to a more empowering heutagogy).

What is an Acceptable Passing Test Score for eLearning Courses? - eLearning Brothers

What is an Acceptable Passing Test Score for eLearning Courses? - eLearning Brothers | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
So how do we test knowledge? Usually in eLearning courses, we measure our learner’s progress using knowledge checks, quizzes, or some type of tests.
Ralph Springett's insight:

The comment 'it depends' is really the salient point. Examples of the variables include: are you testing knowledge which requires instant recall in the field, or is it something that would normally be looked up? Is the test a portion of the total knowledge or everything taught? Is the course competence based - what is your agreed definition of competence? Is the test summative for the purpose of accreditation, of formative to move to the next section of learning?

This complexity is why assessment is best guided by principles and supported by a rubric so the SME, accreditors and designers have some common ground on which to base their decisions.

It is good to be reminded that social learning is nothing new. I am not sure if we should 'leave it alone' as the article suggests, rather, we might look at how we can remove roadblocks (such as imposing overly rigid learning structures) which devalue or reduce the recognition of social learning.

The Pedagogy, Andragogy, Heutagogy of Mobile Learning

This presentation explores the move from pedagogy to andragogy to heutagogy and from instructivism to constructivism to connectivism – all within the context o…
Ralph Springett's insight:

Interesting reading. It may be the role of the teacher is more to recognise the type of instruction required, rather than simply move towards self directed learning. In my experience many learners still need to learn how to learn - self motivation remains a long way off, with learning often driven by fairly ugly realities such as fear of being uneducated or there having no alternatives (like a job).

That said there is a need for teachers to understand this learning styles spectrum so they can provide for the wide range of needs learners present with.
