Is College Worth The Skyrocketing Costs? | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Between skyrocketing tuition and student debt, we couldn't help but wonder: Do four-year degrees still pay off?
Ralph Springett's insight:

The model of delivery was able to remain unchanged because, "as state funding declined, the student loan industry stepped into the void."

Private business is not socially conscious.

Increasing student engagement through Interactive Learning Design | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Modern learning is a social and collaborative process of knowledge building where a learner interacts with the content and the instructor as well as with peers.

Ralph Springett's insight:

They say the downloadable resources also creates an opportunity of offline learning – which is quite a boon for learners who have sporadic internet connectivity.

Now imagine a downloadable resource which has interactive elements - this is learner centred and engaging.

How to Choose Digital Curricula for Blended Learning Infographic | e-Learning Infographics

How to Choose Digital Curricula for Blended Learning Infographic | e-Learning Infographics | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
The How to Choose Digital Curricula for Blended Learning Infographic provides answers to 10 crucial blended learning related questions educators should answer.
Ralph Springett's insight:

Do these people know what curricula is? Curricula is the scope of the learning down to the learning goals. The info graphic asks useful questions, but is not focussed on the curricula, more the process of developing a course.

My nine steps for developing a curricula, and ultimately, a course.

Consider learner needs and wants

Understand learner capability

Clarify learner access to digital tools

Establish learning goals (the curricula)

Define measurable outcomes which demonstrate understanding

Decide on teaching, learning and assessment processes

Locate teaching, learning and assessment resources

Consider hardware and infrastructure needs

Cross-reference against research and accredited programmes

Steps 1-5 are about the curricula. The remaining steps are about developing the course.

Ebooks v paper - FT.com

Ebooks v paper - FT.com | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Choosing books to take on holiday has got more difficult in recent years. Now it is a question not just of what to read but how – on paper, tablet, e-reader, or perhaps even a phone – and people have strong opinions on which is best.

When Anne Campbell of the Open University in Scotland looked at how students used Kindle readers and paper books, she found that the electronic devices promoted more deep reading and less active learning.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Good article. Interesting comment about the learning aspect of digital text - particularly on backlit and single-window devices. Personally I can read conveniently, but struggle to study effectively on a tablet.

Taking notes? Bring a pen, skip the computer - The Boston Globe | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Taking notes by hand forces students to grapple with the material enough to summarize it, since they aren’t physically capable of writing down every word. The constraints enforced by the rudimentary technology of pen and paper force a deeper engagement with the material.

Ralph Springett's insight:

We actually all knew this. But conveniently tried to forget as we pushed our tech barrows along.

Is flexible study the future for universities? | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Students increasingly want their courses to move in step with the demands of the modern economy, so how can universities introduce more flexible structures while maintaining standards?
Ralph Springett's insight:

Digital resources still have a long way to go to really respond to learners' needs. Getting rich portable media offline is a start. Introducing collaborative learning and flexible assessment are two more key initiatives. What would be your priorities as a learner?

The Shift From Teaching Content To Teaching Learning

The Shift From Teaching Content To Teaching Learning | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

What is meant to be going on inside that black box called the mind and what is actually going on in their minds? These are essential questions as teachers. It is the continual addressing of these questions that moves us from the ranks of the naïve and okay teachers to skilled professionals.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Although never making the point this article draws out the need to move from delivering information to delivering instruction about how to find, identify, analyse and apply information. Key questions for independent learners are - what is the question.? what information will be useful? How can I crosscheck my findings? How can I show I understand?

The future of the eBook

The future of the eBook | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

So what is a book?  Is it any different from a website? In an always- connected world, do we even need textbooks?  The victory of the worldwide web over the other more complex systems around at the time might still contain a lesson for the developers of e-Books.

Ralph Springett's insight:

Textbooks are morphing into frameworks for learning, not only containing quality assured information, but links to OERs and support. In effect they are am bedded in the weave of the Internet but provide a device-resident touchstone for learning.

Classrooms flooded with devices | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Are all these shiny iPads and laptops actually improving our children's education?
Ralph Springett's insight:

Good points raised. So, what do you actually need in order to improve teaching and learning (educational outcomes)?

Help learners and teachers keep the curriculum in sight during daily practice.

Highlight the things learners need to do and know in order to demonstrate success.

Curate resources and environments which facilitate (rather than distract from ) learning.

Changing How We Evaluate Online Higher Education: Notes on Quality and Cost

Changing How We Evaluate Online Higher Education: Notes on Quality and Cost | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

A direct comparison of traditional online higher education and MOOCs based solely on quality is insufficient for determining the significance of this new format and business model — because, as everyone knows, MOOCs are free (or close to free).

Ralph Springett's insight:

Higher Ed does not focus "almost exclusively on quality" as this article suggests. Higher Ed is often judged on reputation - not just for quality but for work outcomes, which may relate to the people you meet or are introduced to during your studies. Case in point, Harvard.

Will a degree made up of Moocs ever be worth the paper it's written on? | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
The University of the People can now hand out degrees to its online students – but will employers take them seriously?
Ralph Springett's insight:

The answer lies in the assessment of retained knowledge and skills (as opposed to assessment for teaching and learning). If the assessment process is understood by industry (the employer) to be robust and equivalent to a traditional degree the delivery is a moot point. The difficulty may be the cost of assessment.
