August 13, 2014 by Megan Mead. Check out this list of MOOCs specifically designed for K - 12 education.
Ralph Springett's insight:

Great open resources. Imaging, teacher finds good resource on web. Teacher tells student. Learner forgets/loses link and misses opportunity. BUT, if the teacher runs a digital overview of their course, one which the student sees every day, then the link can be found. Whether this is a class LMS space or a mobile coursebook or google hangout, it it the authority of the teacher + easy access + connection to required learning which makes this a winner.

27 Strategies to Motivate Students in Class ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

27 Strategies to Motivate Students in Class ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it

Looking for ways to motivate your students? 27 strategies for you to use in class to get your students motivated. These strategies cover both types of motivation: intrinsic motivation (an inner drive to engage in an activity for its own sake because it is interesting and satisfying in itself), and extrinsic ( a drive to engage in an activity because of a reward to engage in the activity or a punishment for not engaging).

Ralph Springett's insight:

Interesting blog-post looking from the POV of the teacher. It surprises me they did not:

1. Give the learner ownership of a guiding resource (context and expectations)

2. Tell the learner it is their responsibility to learn - make this VERY clear.

3. Continually ask the learner what support and resources they need

4. Show the learner (working alongside them) how to do it until they get the hang of things.

It is not real change. The power continues to rest with the lecturer/institution. Support the learner to independence and we may see real disruption. This is tech + normal. Khan did better.

A few reflections on the Common Core Wars | The Thomas B. Fordham Institute

A few reflections on the Common Core Wars | The Thomas B. Fordham Institute | Mobilization of Learning | Scoop.it
Legitimate concern #3: Confusing, convoluted textbooks

I have complete sympathy for parents whose kids are bringing home math homework that is indecipherable. My own view is that the standards themselves aren’t the problem and that well-designed textbooks can and do teach the Common Core in a straightforward way. But some publishers have totally botched it, misreading the standards and/or creating materials that are vastly more complicated than they need to be.

Ralph Springett's insight:

With increased mobility in learning the source of information becomes secondary. It is the guidance and support fro the learner that is critical. If truly learner centred the gateway to learning is highly mobile and offers a curated  range of information sources - not just one text the school commits to.
