M-Pesa pioneer and Vodafone’s managing director of mobile money, Michael Joseph, has told Mobile World Live of his frustration at the way in which operators have tackled mobile money deployments, claiming the industry has been held back by a lack of long-term investment. "Mobile money is not a typical mobile operator product like a ringback tone or a new SMS product," he says in an exclusive new interview.

A joint venture between mobile operators Vodafone, O2 and Everything Everywhere to set up a mobile payments service is likely to be approved. According to a Reuters report, EU regulators will give the scheme, dubbed Project Oscar, the go ahead to compete with rival services in the market, which includes Apple and Google. The project is designed to allow consumers to use their mobile devices to buy goods, instead of cash or cards. However, the project has come in for criticism from 3, the only mobile operator to be left out of the plans.

The EC has approved a joint venture called Project Oscar between mobile operators Vodafone, O2 and Everything Everywhere to offer mobile payments services in the UK. The commission has given the venture unconditional approval. In a statement, the EC said that the joint venture "will not likely lead to a significant impediment to effective competition".
