Square, the fastest-growing mobile payments company in the U.S., has just closed its latest financing round, the start-up told in a short announcement on its website. No details are provided, but according to various sources the company has raised $200 million at a $3.25 billion valuation. By comparison, in its previous funding round last year, Square had raised $100 million at a valuation of $1.6 billion. Since then, the company’s processing volume has grown exponentially and its staff has more than doubled.

The commission has given the venture unconditional approval. In a statement, the EC said that the joint venture "will not likely lead to a significant impediment to effective competition".

A joint venture between mobile operators Vodafone, O2 and Everything Everywhere to set up a mobile payments service is likely to be approved. According to a Reuters report, EU regulators will give the scheme, dubbed Project Oscar, the go ahead to compete with rival services in the market, which includes Apple and Google. The project is designed to allow consumers to use their mobile devices to buy goods, instead of cash or cards. However, the project has come in for criticism from 3, the only mobile operator to be left out of the plans.

Isis, the mobile payment joint venture backed by AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA, is to launch in September, reports StrategyEye. Speaking to Bloomberg, Verifone Systems’ CEO, Doug Bergeron, says that the service, which will enable consumers make purchases with their mobile phones, will reportedly be available in Austin and Salt Lake City initially, before becoming available to other parts of the US. Verifone is also partnering with Isis to provide payment terminals for the project.

IN 2007 Safaricom, the biggest mobile operator in Kenya, launched M-PESA, a service that allows money to be sent and received using mobile phones. It has since signed up 15m users, is used by 70% of the adult population and has become central to the economy: around 25% of Kenya’s GNP flows through it.

Similar schemes have had some success elsewhere. More than 120 mobile operators now offer mobile-money services of various kinds, and another 90 will soon join them. There has been a particular push in east Africa. Yet in many poor countries where mobile money should be flourishing, it isn’t....

London Underground says no to NFC

It turns out that turnstiles might not be the best place to test NFC after all. Gigaom reports that Transport for London won't be introducing NFC-enabled mobile payments for the London Underground anytime soon.

The problem? Too slow.

"Unfortunately ... we found that the technology was not fast enough to complete the transaction in under 500 milliseconds, which we would require," said Transport for London customer experience director Shashi Verma in the story.
