From Passbook to Facebook: Monetizing Mobile Money

From Passbook to Facebook: Monetizing Mobile Money | Mobility & Financial Services | Scoop.it

Much has been made of the conspicuous absence of Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology from Apple’s latest iPhone 5, a move that shirked industry expectations and called into question the future of NFC. But while the phone itself falls short of industry-wide NFC hopes, Apple’s newly-introduced Passbook app on the iOS 6 may be a harbinger of big changes in the mobile payment ecosystem over the coming years.

New GSMA publication on cross-border mobile money remittance models in West Africa | Mobile for Development

New GSMA publication on cross-border mobile money remittance models in West Africa | Mobile for Development | Mobility & Financial Services | Scoop.it

GSMA has released a new case study which highlights early results from a promising new model for cross-border remittances. In this model, which is rapidly emerging across East and West Africa, mobile money is used as both the sending and the receiving channel. This paper draws insights from two early examples in the West African Economic Monetary Union (WAEMU), where member states are socio-economically integrated and adoption of mobile money has been rapid in recent years.

Orange Money International Transfer links up Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Senegal, and is the first example of mobile money transfers between three markets, enabling six distinct remittance corridors. The partnership between MTN Mobile Money in Côte d’Ivoire and Airtel Money in Burkina Faso is the first case of operators from separate groups agreeing to interoperate their mobile money services for international transfers through HomeSend.
Katia Hilal's insight:

The two studies reveal how big  the untapped opportunities for inter African remittance are. In these two cases the countries involved belonged to the West African Economic Monetary Union and benefited from the support of the BCEAO, a common currency, and the existence of a common regulation.

The role that HomeSend played in the MTN/Airtel case is crucial: The two operators did not belong to the same group and did not share the same infrastructure. This partner was therefore able to play the role of the "glue". HomeSend's "hub" model was the best option for (a) connecting the two mobile money platforms within 3 months, (b) mediate the commercial negotiation and be ready for the service launch.

This model can also apply for interoperability between operators in the same country.

When different currencies are involved,  the integration becomes more complex but HomeSend, in addition to managing  real-time remittance messaging and AML, provides currency conversion and advice of charge services.

Tigo Pesa Interoperability | Millicom | Mobility & Financial Services | Scoop.it

Millicom’s pioneering mobile money partnerships in Tanzania, firstly with Airtel and Zantel, will soon extend to Vodacom, who offer the country’s dominant mobile money service called M-Pesa.

The tie-up will place M-Pesa's seven million mobile money users in direct contact with Millicom’s own customers who, for the first time in Africa, will be able to transact with every mobile money user in the country, regardless of network.

Katia Hilal's insight:

Tanzania will be an interesting lab to observe and monitor to check if the impact on the growth of mobile money usage is in line with the expectations of "interoperability advocates" of which I am one strong supporter.

MasterCard (NYSE:MA), eServGlobal (LSE: ESG.L, ASX: ESV.AX) and BICS today announced the formation of HomeSend, a joint venture (JV) which will enable consumers to send money to and from mobile money accounts, payment cards, bank accounts or cash outlets -- regardless of their location or that of the recipient.

The Global Journey from Cash to Cashless

The Global Journey from Cash to Cashless | Mobility & Financial Services | Scoop.it

Even though much of the world's population has access to many different options for making payments without it, cash still persists. As a way of making payment, cash takes time to get at, is riskier to carry, and by some estimates, cash costs society as much as 1.5% of GDP. Electronic payments on the other hand have been proven to boost economic growth, while advancing financial inclusion. It is for these reasons that countries around the world are working to make their payment systems less dependent on cash.

Katia Hilal's insight:

This new global report from MasterCard tracks 33 major economies and measures where they stand from going cashless. The report identifies the key factors that are driving this move and classifies countries in four categories: inception, transitioning, tipping point and nearly Cashless.

With iBeacon, Apple is going to dump on NFC and embrace the internet of things

With iBeacon, Apple is going to dump on NFC and embrace the internet of things | Mobility & Financial Services | Scoop.it
When iOS 7 is released next week, retailers and other large indoor spaces are going to be able to use a technology called iBeacon to send data over short distances to iPhones. Here’s how it will work.
Katia Hilal's insight:

The use of iBeacon for payments may not be that straight forward. The concept of "card holder present" needs to be supported by evidence like making contact between the user device and the payment terminal. Another complexity is related to the security aspect that has been thoroughly analyzed and standardized for NFC.

This being said, it is always thrilling to see a new type of access emerging, and with it, a whole lot of new usage possibilities.

Kenyan mobile cash transactions hit Sh1.7trn

Kenyan mobile cash transactions hit Sh1.7trn | Mobility & Financial Services | Scoop.it

Kenyans transacted more than Sh1.7 trillion on their mobile phones in the first 11 months of 2013, surpassing the value of the country’s budget this financial year.

This represents a 23.7 per cent increase from Sh1.4 trillion in the same period in 2012.

And this has been attributed to increased uptake of mobile phone financial services due to convenience, ease of use and security.

Katia Hilal's insight:

Kenya continues to be the most successful implementation of Mobile Money and an example to follow. The diversity of services offered, the ease of use and the security level are boosting the usage despite the lack of interoperbility between the different service providers.
