Ah ha! Here's another article advocating using PowerPoint for marketing. And of course, for sharing your stories.


But of course, you've got to craft the PPT right in order for a compelling story to be told. Search under 'PowerPoint' here in this curation to get the best articles I've found on creating "wow" PPT presentations and stories.


This article makes some great points. Make life easy for yourself -- go for a PPT instead of the time and expense of a video. Particularly if time is short and you don't have money to burn.

From Karen: What a great article that is related to business storytelling! Biz storytelling is all about finding and sharing stories that create engagement. The steps below give tips for how to do this: listening, conversations, etc. I particularly like the last point: go offline -- because that is when storytelling REALLY starts happening, and where relationships are cemented.

So if you’re not engaging on social media because you think “everyone else is doing it, so why bother,” or you just don’t think people are going to notice your content, that’s a cop out. If you have something interesting to say, then SAY IT. You never know when your tweet, post, blog or video will be exactly what someone was hoping to find on any particular day.

 

Wait. Let’s back this train up.

Before I go further, let me say first that you really have to buy in to the importance of even showing up. I mean, why talk about breaking through clutter if you don’t believe there’s value in adding your 2 cents to social conversations. You have to know who you want to talk to and where they play. What’s your objective and what’s your message? No need to figure out how to get people’s attention if you don’t know WHY you want their attention.

Once you have that all squared away, then by all means, start breaking through and turning heads. Here’s how.

1) Develop a noticeable social presence. This is the bare minimum, but you’d be surprised how many brands and businesses don’t have completed profiles. So here’s the starting point—make your profiles interesting. Social media is fun, so have fun with your profiles! Post funny pictures. Have a sense of humor. And engage. Don’t talk at—talk with. Social media is a two-way street, not a commercial.

2) Listen to the conversations. You know how when you’re at a party and you walk up to a group of people, you wait a moment before you jump in? You don’t want to be rude, so you listen first to see what they’re talking about. You can learn a lot by listening. Figure out who your customers are talking to in their social circles, and listen. This will help you craft your message to be more targeted. More interesting, if you will. And your message will rise to the top.

3) Be an equal-opportunity player. I almost deleted that because it sounds bad—but it’s interesting, so I’m going with it. What I mean is, it’s impossible to engage with your entire audience and drive your message through if you aren’t playing on several social networks. This may mean your social promotion campaign lives in various forms on several networks in order to be relevant. Not everyone tweets. Not everyone posts. Not everyone pins. But you, my friend, are a marketer, which means you speak the language of the people, wherever they are. You know. When in Rome.

4) Create a conversation, not just a campaign.  A campaign is a good place to start—but don’t end there. If you take away nothing else but this today, fine. Just get this: Marketing on social media is NOT about advertising and promotion. If you’re on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to just sell your stuff and promote the heck out of it, you don’t stand a chance of breaking through the clutter. People will turn a blind eye. Consumers are advertised to all day long, in so many ways. But a brand who actually engages with them? Listens to them? Asks questions and responds back to theirs? Now that is something they’ll notice. Trust me.


5) Go offline. Crazy, right? So crazy this just might work. Start the conversation online, but then try taking it out of the social media sphere. Last I checked most of our cell phones could still make calls. What if you reached out with something more personal than a tweet? Or mailed something to follow up after an online interaction? Social is just a means to building an introduction. But the magic happens when you carry the connection beyond the online world and into the real world.



Key Takeaway: You want to turn heads in social media? Be interesting. Engage with your networks. Create conversation. Respond to your audience. Care about them as much (if not more) than your campaign. These things will get you noticed and help you bust through the clutter.

5 tips on how to cut through the social media clutter and turn audience's heads, i think these tips are valid because nearly everyone is using social media as a marketing tool so naturally, the clutter is forever growing. The tip i agreed with the most was number 4 (create a conversation, not just a campaign). This rang true with me as i tend to ignore advertising messages on social media, however i am more likely to pay attention to an active conversation between a brand and its customers.

Stories are everywhere, but the real trick is the following, says Tom Watson, professor of public relations at Bournemouth University: “For brand communicators, the challenge is to create narratives that are deserving of trust by their target markets and sustainable over time."


I also like what Kevin Murray, chairman of PR agency the Good Relations Group, says: “I use stories to entertain people at dinner parties to amuse. But in business you need to tell stories that make a difference.” Good point!

"Have you ever looked at your marketing materials and thought, “that’s not really me?” Been there. In fact, my (thankfully last) resume comes to mind. And, oddly, my mind wandered a bit, thinking how most marketing materials similarly fail to tell us what’s really unique about a brand."

 

Well, I am embarrassed to admit this, but the author of Story Works, Sharlene Sones, asked me to review her new e-book months ago -- and I am just now getting to it. My apologies Sharlene! But better late than never I guess.

 

I love this book. For several reasons:


Size & readabililty -- this book is constructed so you can easily flip through it. And it is laid out so it is easy to read and digest. Perfect! I can't tell you how many posts and e-books I ignore because the layout makes it too hard to read. And I wouldn't want to subject you to that either. Sharlene's book is a breeze to walk through.

 

Content -- Sharlene does a masterful job at guiding us through the business applications of story. She touches on everything from marketing/branding, unique proposition, sales, to leadership, culture, career development, and back. Whew! That's a lot of territory to cover. But she does it well.

 

Sharlene explains how story will make a difference in these areas -- and WHY it does. And she gives us tips for using story in several applications. As a bonus, there are lots of story quotes to add to your list, along with examples from companies to make her points.

 

What I particularly like is her focus on story as conversation -- and that story sharing is where the real leverage is in org story work.

 

I may quibble a bit on some of Sharlene's points -- are testimonials really stories? Depends on the definition you use. For me, not so much. But the bulk of Sharlene's material is so right on, I am not going to be so picky.

 

Sharlene also tackles 'engagement' as a topic and brings to light the story dynamics involved in that. I think there is still a lot to learn about storytelling and engagement in business, but this gives us a good start.

 

I wish there had been more focus on listening, too. Implied in Sharlene's book is how transformative stories can be in business. A lot of what she talks about is story at the transactional level -- even when story provides inspiration and meaning. For example -- when a business is really in the story groove, stories have the potential to change both the teller and listener. Story as transformation in business is the next frontier I think.

 

I could say more, but I'm running out of space. This book is inspirational and a good kick in the pants for bringing story into your core business activities. If you want a great e-book primer on business storytelling, this is it.

 

If you want to go deeper, dig into the books by Annette Simmons and Steve Denning.

 

You do have to buy this book. But you can also download a chapter for free. I have absolutely no affiliation with Sharlene other than we are colleagues and both went to grad school at the Univ. of Pennsylvania.

Yeah! I always like really good examples to share with you. And I am sure that Geil's sales do increase because she is willing to tell this story.

 

So try it out! Geil's story should give you some good ideas for how to get started and craft your story.

In the interviewer Tim Schmoyer chats with Patrick about how businesses can use the Primal Code and they share examples as they go along.

 

What caught my attention was element #2: The Creed. This is your "I believe..." statement.

 

I'm thinking that your creed/I believe statement is a new way to think/talk about a company's Unique Selling Proposition -- which is a good thing! I find creeds/I believe statements to be much more compelling and easier for many to get their heads wrapped around.

 

The rest of the Primal Code are these elements:

Creation story Icons Rituals Language Anti-believers A Leader

When you link your stories into elements 2-6 you will have a dynamite marketing voice or point of view. And you can use these elements to adjust the rest of your biz stories so you have a tight, united whole.

"An October 2012 survey by Edelman Berland and Adobe found that American consumers are looking for deeper brand engagement than banner ads and social media “like” buttons. 73% of the 1000 adults surveyed agreed with the statement, “Advertisements should tell a unique story, not just try to sell.”

 

Well, there can be no argument now about the case for business storytelling! At least as far as branding and marketing is concerned.

Truly, storytelling is creating fundamental change in the marketing and branding field. Payling lays this out, and offers us information about new patterns of attention that have emerged with the use of technology and the internet.

 

Payling doesn't offer any specific solutions, but clearer thinking about the evolution of working with stories in marketing/branding and some of the unique characteristcs that are emerging is always welcome.

In our social media-infused world, traditional marketing logic just doesn't work.

 

I had earmarked this article to share with you awhile ago and just found it again when cleaning up my emails. Better late than never!

 

Here's what I love about this post -- it makes no bones about the fact that marketing is changing. And if you haven't gotten with the program, get on board quick!

 

Now, I don't agree that ALL traditional marketing techniques are dead. But the author Bill Lee sure does make a great case explaining how things are changing. And his statistics are riveting.

 

And I also like that he shares with us what we need to do to stay with the curve:

Getting into community marketing Identify and promote customers that bring value (and not just based on how much they buy) Help your customers build social capital Involve your customers in creating solutions together

 

What's story got to do with it? Stories are the way the points above happen. It's all about the stories you share, listen to, promote, ask for, engage with, and retell. And hint hint -- these are your customer stories mostly!

This is a quick yet very insightful article linking the interior design of a hotel, storytelling, and women's liberation.

 

"Whaaaaattttt??!!" you say. Yep. It's a perfect example of how a hotel got creative and leveraged storytelling in order to market themselves more effectively, and increase sales.

 

The post about a New York City hotel that originally opened as the Hotel Martha Washington. It was the first hotel in the country specially designed for women only. Based on the the building's history, the new owners of the hotel created a persona that typified women who stayed at the hotel.

 

From there they created interior designs that connected together its history, the contributions of 12 women to our world, their identified persona, and their marketing efforts. Brilliant!

 

I love how this company translated storytelling into the physical world through its interior designs. More companies need to be doing this for enhancing both employee and customer experiences/engagement.

Here is a example packed SlideShare presentation about 15 marketing trends for 2013 that Bhargava has identified.


As you can imagine, since it is the end of the year, I've looked at a ton of these kinds of lists. This is by far the best one I have found.


And 3 of the 15 trends have to do with storytelling: Partnership Publishing; Precious Print; and Back Storytelling.


What I love about Bhargava's work are all of the examples shared to back up his trends. Even for the trends that don't have to do with storytelling, this piece is well worthwhile.


I also really like that at the end of the slides he gives us his 2012 list and shares if the trends materialized or not. Even better, he then shares his own back story of how he identified the trends for 2013.


This is a very complete list and dense with material to chew on. It can certainly help our businesses in 2013. Enjoy!

With that depressing lead-in to this review of Chris Ware's new book, I hesitated to curate it. But the construction of the book itself is so intriguing that I decided, "What the heck."


And how does this remotely connect to business storytelling? Here's why:


I think what Ware did is quite a unique twist on storytelling -- he's definitely pushing the envelope in how to engage with stories and create new meanings from how a person engages with his work. That in and of itself is cool to know about.


And your biz stories could be thought of -- maybe even organized and delivered -- in a similar way. Our biz stories are a collection, a set, of stories that interact with each other in different times and in different ways. When I am with one client, I may select several stories to tell. When I am with a different client, I may repeat some of those stories and add/subtract others. So biz storytelling is best thought of as fluid.


And in enterprises, sets of stories can be arranged and rearranged in infinite combinations.


So what if we could convey our biz stories like Ware has done? It certainly is intriguing to think about!


On another note -- since the holidays are coming, this also could be a really cool gift. It's pricey -- and last I checked it was on back-order from Amazon. But if you are looking for a gift that is really different, this could be for you!

I originally passed up on the original article cited here because its focus was on transmedia storytelling. And I also passed on the research outcomes reported here by Latitutde on the Futue of Storytelling.


But I like this article because it translated the original work on transmedia storytelling into a business application that wasn't just about marketing. The author, Lenn Millbower, focuses on bringing the lessons of storytelling and transmedia work into corporate training/ knowledge transfer.


The 4 'I's listed in the post are right on. Storytelling has always had immersive qualities to it for the last 100,000 years. Immersion is critical in learning. The other 'I's are equally important.


It is a quick article with good insights -- so go grab all four of the 'I's.


Now the reason I ignored the Latitude research project was because it is basing its opinions about the future of storytelling based on the people it polled -- gamers and such. Hardly a representative group. I didn't find their insights interesting. But if you want to read it yourself, follow the link to the research that's provided in this article.

"As the buzz about content marketing, social media and all things digital continues to rise, one of the catch phrases that gets a lot of attention is storytelling in marketing. We afford it incredible lip service but do we actually practice it?"


Hmmmm -- good question. Here the author, Drew McLellan asks if in previous decades business was better at storytelling in its marketing and advertising.

 

Makes you think. Drew includes 3 videos to make his point. The first is a 1980s video from Dunkin Donuts as an example of effective storytelling. Well -- it is definitely not storytelling but instead an add that is all features and benefits.

 

The other two advertising videos however, are great examples from the past of really good stories.

 

I don't know if our biz storytelling is not as good these days as in previous decades. But I do like the questions Drew poses at the end of the post to help us decide.

Customer case study specialist Casey Hibbard shares some research from Gartner about the impact of customer stories on sales, and then lists specifically how customer stories can lead to business growth.

 

As I'm rebuilding my website, I'm taking Casey's advice -- and hope you do too. 

 

Oh -- but make sure you are actually writing customer stories to share and not testimonials. Testimonials are critical -- yet they are mostly valuable opinions from customers about their experience with you. That's part of your 'story' but they often are not really stories. 

 

Soooo -- write mini-stories or storied case-studies about your work with customers to receive the full impact of your customer stories!

Telling stories, connectedlyScreen AfricaThere are a couple of points that are worth remembering as you try to transition to a more connected form of digital storytelling. Firstly, the audience is in control.

 

Now here is a thoughtful article that shares with us a glimpse of the future -- specifically the technologies on the horizon that will continue to change the tools we use to share our biz stories.

 

The main point of this post is the increasing importance of connecting and sharing your stories across different technology media -- computer, iPads, mobile. And in various forms -- digital stories, social media snippets, online maps, and the like. To be the most effective, your biz stories need to connect and link together -- be part of a focused whole.

 

This does not mean you have a single narrative that is shared across platforms and through different technologies. This means you have a series of biz stories that you share. Some of these stories are best shared digitally, some in social media, others face-to-face (yes, that is still a technology available to us!!), others on our website, etc. The entire collection of your biz stories create your brand, your voice, your reputation.

 

This is a good "let's step back and see the big picture" article.

 

I very much like the author's points at the end: all of these choices can be overwhelming, and get help from others to work with the new tools. Now if I just had a few more hours each day to use more of these digital tools .... :))

"I’ve long maintained that phenomena like “social media” are behaviors, more so than channels or applications or types of media inventory, what have you. There are extrinsic factors at play like market movements, various forms of scarcity, supply and demand levers, etc. and there are intrinsic factors like human emotion that are rarely, if ever, discussed when it comes to making investments in these types of ventures."

 

My colleague and fellow curator Jan L. Gordon originally shared this post and I thought it would be great to include here also.

 

Why? Because effective storytelling is about conveying emotions. Yet when we share our biz stories, what emotions should we be focusing on? It is easy to default to hope. Or confidence. 

 

What I like about this chart and post is that it addresses the common emotions people experience as they interact and share online -- both positive and negative.

 

It seems logical to me that in knowing this information, we should be paying attention to whether the emotions we are conveying in our biz stories online are connecting with the emotional experiences of people. This chart can help us figure it out.

 

Now, I wouldn't want to be limited to slavishly sticking to this chart. But it is a good place to begin!

 

As the author, Gunther Sonnenfeld says, "I believe that any great technology venture (any great company, really) must provide doors to perception and discovery that look well beyond transactional or even relationship benefits to some degree." Yeah! Treating business storytelling as purely transactional or relational is only the first rung of effectiveness.

 

And don't forget to read the comments at the end of the post. They are chock full of great insights and discussion about online storytelling, branding, and emotion.

This is a quick yet very insightful article linking the interior design of a hotel, storytelling, and women's liberation.

 

"Whaaaaattttt??!!" you say. Yep. It's a perfect example of how a hotel got creative and leveraged storytelling in order to market themselves more effectively, and increase sales.

 

The post about a New York City hotel that originally opened as the Hotel Martha Washington. It was the first hotel in the country specially designed for women only. Based on the the building's history, the new owners of the hotel created a persona that typified women who stayed at the hotel.

 

From there they created interior designs that connected together its history, the contributions of 12 women to our world, their identified persona, and their marketing efforts. Brilliant!

 

I love how this company translated storytelling into the physical world through its interior designs. More companies need to be doing this for enhancing both employee and customer experiences/engagement.
