LinkedIn's Co-founder Reid Hoffman: 'your car will have more lines of code in it than LinkedIn does today'

LinkedIn's Co-founder Reid Hoffman: 'your car will have more lines of code in it than LinkedIn does today' | Mobile&Tablets | Scoop.it

Reid Hoffman is a Silicon Valley power player. He emerged at PayPal, where he was the first full time employee, but is perhaps better known as the co-founder of LinkedIn. The sale of PayPal and IPO of LinkedIn have made him a multi-billionaire, and he has poured that wealth back into startups as one of the most prolific angel investors in the Valley.

More recently he became a full time venture capitalist at GreyCroft Partners, where he runs the $20 million Discovery Fund, making seed stage investments in young tech companies. We chatted with him in Washington, D.C. where he was reciving a leadership award at the annual Computerworld Honors. You can find him on Twitter at Quixotic.

Can Apple’s iPhone challenge Google maps with own app?

Can Apple’s iPhone challenge Google maps with own app? | Mobile&Tablets | Scoop.it

For many people, phones have become an important way to navigate the world, and mobile maps are at the core of the journey. They are often the critical element in commerce, socializing and search. So far, Google has reigned supreme in the mobile map world, with its maps on every iPhone sold so far – and, of course, on every phone based on its own Android operating system. The question is: Can Apple build a map service that does as good a job, or a better one, than Google has?

76% Of SME Retailers Haven’t Gone Mobile, But 89% Want To

76% Of SME Retailers Haven’t Gone Mobile, But 89% Want To | Mobile&Tablets | Scoop.it

Onepoll undertook the study on behalf of MoPowered in which 89% of SME retailers cited mCommerce as essential for capturing new business. The merchants surveyed also believed that mCommerce sales would grow by a third within the next 5 years. Despite this recognition of the importance of mCommerce, only 24% of these retailers actually had a site that is compatible for mCommerce at the time of the survey. The main reasons cited for not going mobile were perceived as high costs, lack of resource and concerns about security. Dominic Keen, chief executive of MoPowered, an mCommerce solution aimed at the smaller retail sector, says: “The retailers that we spoke to are right in thinking that mobile commerce is essential for their growth. We have created a mobile commerce platform to enable SME’s to quickly, easily and cost effectively integrate onto the channel. Research from Google shows that 15% of all online traffic is now coming through mobile. This means that not having a mobile optimised site is equivalent to shutting your online store for one day every week.”

Looks Like Apple Has Changed Its App Store Algorithm Again

Looks Like Apple Has Changed Its App Store Algorithm Again | Mobile&Tablets | Scoop.it

Last week we were alerted to an interesting tweak that had appeared in the Apple App Store: searches for apps were suddenly ranking results higher by user ratings and app descriptions, rather than the names of the apps themselves. Today, one developer says he’s started to notice another change: Apple is now putting a bigger emphasis on keywords plus names.

Tomasz Kolinko, a developer and one of the founders for App Store analysts Appcod.es, says that he discovered the change because his own app, Love Letter Writing, had “advice” in the keywords and hadn’t been showing up in a search for “writing advice”. Today, they noticed that it has come back.

This has some impact on more popular apps as well, he notes in a blog post: “Instagram Camera” now has as its top result Instagram — although he points out to me that Instagram just pushed through an update, where they most likely tweaked their keywords anyway. Back on his app, “writing advice” now gives you the Love Letter Writer app as the top choice. “So do other searches we’ve tested.”

Mobile Website Vs Mobile Applications: Compare The Concepts

Mobile Website Vs Mobile Applications: Compare The Concepts | Mobile&Tablets | Scoop.it

Mobile devices have actually made the world into a global nexus which is connected 24×7. Everything is acquired on the move with that small gadget of yours and makes the information easily palatable to you. The development of mobile applications can be majorly categorised into two types: Mobile websites and mobile apps.

Comparing and contrasting these can give a clear idea about which one to choose. But the main thing is that while mobile websites are for marketing purpose the mobile apps are for specific interactive application development for diverse media including games, music and the like. Let’s see the comparisons and contradictions between both these forms of mobile development.
