Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Wow thought this debate about benefits of responsive design had long since been settled. Not so much as it turns out in banking. Here is an excellent article on why major bankers aren't sold on responsive design (mind you I am not sure I trust anything from a business vertical that hardly sets design award standards LOL).

The Future Of The Web: The Case For Responsive Design In 2013 - Forbes

The Future Of The Web: The Case For Responsive Design In 2013 - Forbes | Mobile Revolution | Scoop.it
Guest post written by Igor Faletski Igor Faletski is CEO of Mobify, which provides tools for adapting Web sites for smartphones and tablets.

Carin van Vuuren wrote a guest post last month for Forbes.com criticizing the responsive design...

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

I see the SEO case as compelling enough to make responsive design a priority in 2013 all by itself. Google is clear in its preference for responsive websites.

The question is where does responsive design fit in the rapidly changing mobile development ecosystem where hybrid sites featuring HTML5 code executing inside of a more typical mobile web frame is becoming common.

What is clear is we are working on the car as we attempt to drive at high speeds. What is unclear is exactly how your digital assets should become "responsive". I don't think our customers could care about this very inside baseball debate about how to code what they see.

I think every website should examine its presentation across devices and actions (email, browsing, filling out forms, buying). If you website looks fine should you pull it apart and put it back together again as responsive?

Yes and no. Yes if such experimentation provides other benefits, benefits tied enough to ROI you can afford them. Here is the rub, you will never now the lost ROI of NOT doing the work. SEO ROI of this 2nd generation nature is very hard to justify or fully understand.

In these cases where the bean counters can make a determination clear enough to create action marketers do what we get paid to do - make an informed guess.

If your mobile traffic is greater than 5% and/or your trend line shows a year over year double or better in mobile traffic then the time to get serious and figure out a mobile solution covering everything should be a 2013 priority.

If not, if your stats are below 5% and your trend line flat, you may be able to live dangerously for another year.

Bits & Bytes: Responsive design makes mobile media a joy
Tulsa World
Responsive web design may be the next revolution in the way we access the Internet.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Beware SEO Implications of Responsive
Agree with the need to design responsive websites in this day and age, but beware that SEO can be an issue when designing responsive websites (sites that look good no matter what receiving device).

Responsive is a HUGE opportunity to think about your content differently to "snipitize" it, tag it and spin it in many different directions and combinations. Do that and your responsive design also gets you read for Web 3.0's much more dynamic framework.

2013 The Year of Responsive Design [Infographic]

2013 The Year of Responsive Design [Infographic] | Mobile Revolution | Scoop.it
With a multitude of mobile devices coming out almost every week, how can marketers ensure that their content is optimized for different device types, screen sizes, and capabilities?
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

I think 2013 will be the year of responsive design. I mean "responsive" in the broadest way possible. I think we will move from worrying about how the data looks to understanding the vast limitations of how we create and structure data.

Another way to say this is social CMS.
