Why the music industry’s “fat head” is eating its “long tail”

Why the music industry’s “fat head” is eating its “long tail” | Mobile & Music | Scoop.it

Technological utopians have been predicting for years that the internet will weaken the dominance of superstar artists in the music industry and enrich the teeming masses of smaller, niche creators.

But new research suggests that this “long tail” theory is wrong: superstars are capturing the vast majority of music revenues and their share is increasing – not decreasing – because of the rise of digital services like iTunes and Spotify.

Victor Khattar's curator insight, August 12, 6:09 PM

I found this article interesting as it is associated with the advancement of technology and how piracy instead of decreasing is actually expanding and corporations that are in the fight with the internet piracy are actually supporting it. Google store and AppStore have apps that actually let you download music for me.

Nicholas Tenney's curator insight, August 16, 5:26 PM

In my opinion this article focuses on one of the biggest rolls in music piracy.  Smartphones and the introduction of apps is todays version of mp3 files and its impact to music.  Smartphones and apps make illegal downloading of music even easier.  These "digital libraries" are full of music for free and most are not at the consent of the producer.  Todays smartphones are better than computers from 10 years ago making technology partially a negative to music even with all the positives it brings.
