What happens if you give a thousand Motorola Zoom tablet PCs to Ethiopian kids who have never even seen a printed word?

Does this kill the idea that digital natives are actually more in tune with the digital age?

 

I first heard of this project last November and have been really intrigued by the entire experiment.  The idea, drop technology into a culture devoid of not only technology, but also devoid of literacy and see what happens. 

 

Though it is far from over, one thing is obvious.  Based on the very preliminary outcomes of this project, I think one could make a strong argument that one does not need to be a “digital native” as defined by Prensky to take advantage of, adapt to or learn from digital technologies.  Can such success with new technology be attributed to intuitive technology?  Clearly, these kids have all the capabilities of digital natives, and they do not even qualify for digital immigrant status.

I cannot envision a world where we have high speed land lines to every corner of rural America, but I do think there is massive opportunity out there for wireless carriers to fill this void.  The million dollar question is will wireless broadband be delivered competitively or in a monopolistic fashion?
