Control What Students Can Do with iPad Using Guided Access Functionality ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Control What Students Can Do with iPad Using Guided Access Functionality ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Mobile Learning & Technology Assisted Strategies | Scoop.it

"If not properly used, iPad can also be a source of a major distraction for students. In fact, one of the common thing that happens in classrooms using iPad is that some students take the opportunity when  iPad is on to wander off topic and get lost in iPad meanderings. So next time you want to use iPad with students make sure you activate the Guided Access functionality which will limit what students will be able to do on iPad."

Theophilus's insight:

What I like about this idea is the centrality of learning as opposed to the centrality of the device. We've discovered that sharing a device have far-reaching and positive possibilities for networking, interaction, teamwork and collaboration in the formal learning environment. OLPC is an example of a notion that goes the other way - individualism, not to mention, the complexities when trying to enable young learners to focus.

Five software tools to help online students avoid distractions.

Five software tools to help online students avoid distractions. | Mobile Learning & Technology Assisted Strategies | Scoop.it

Whether it comes from Facebook, Twitter, Google, Instagram or Reddit, distractions abound online.

This is especially true for online students, who do much of their work on the Internet. How do you resist the urge to check social media when your phone is blowing up with notifications? How do you not check that email, not Google a question that just came to you, or not see if your friend read that important message you sent her on Facebook? If you can’t find the willpower, there’s another way.

Theophilus's insight:

Some very relevant "how do you" probes here. There is, of course, the eternal struggle between staying focused and deviating into the peripheral - making these questions quite meaningful. I imagine that off-the-grid browser-based solutions where curriculum-related content informs the knowledge management system do not suffer of this disease. Right?
