Google message service to put pressure on SMS - Rumour :: StrategyEye - Industry Intelligence

Google message service to put pressure on SMS - Rumour :: StrategyEye - Industry Intelligence | Mobile Guru | Scoop.it
Google is reportedly developing its own smartphone messaging platform to rival Research In Motion (RIM)’s BlackBerry Messenger service and Apple’s recently-unveiled iMessage facility, in a move that casts further doubt on the future of the traditional SMS format. Sources speaking to the Wall Street Journal claim that the firm is developing a messaging platform for its Android operating system in order to stay ahead of its smartphone OS rivals. SMS growth is slowing even before the release of iMessage and Google’s as-yet-unnamed service, with the worldwide volume of texts growing just 8.7% during the second half of 2010, the slowest increase in more than a decade, according to the WSJ.

IABUK : Mcommerce to be worth £19bn by 2021

Mobile commerce is set to be worth £19 billion by 2021, as consumers become more comfortable with using their smartphones to make purchases, new research by online auction site eBay has found.

Wednesday, 1 June 2011

The research reveals that the sector is on the verge of a fourfold increase, which could boost the economy by £4.5 billion by 2016 and by a further £13 billion by 2021.

However, it was also found that the industry is being held back by poor mobile broadband, with more than a third of consumers failing to complete a purchase due to broadband coverage.

As a result, eBay is calling on the telecommunications regulator Ofcom to support the m-commerce sector as it is currently deciding how to auction 4G licences.

Mobile Helps Drive European Online Display Ad Growth |

Mobile Helps Drive European Online Display Ad Growth | | Mobile Guru | Scoop.it
Mobile ad spend now accounts for 2 to 3 per cent of total online ad spend in Europe, according to new figures from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) Europe.
The IAB Europe says that "the long-awaited take-off of mobile advertising has been realised thanks to the advent of the smartphone/3G/apps ecosystem". It adds that mobile ad spend figures are only available for 12 of the IAB's 25 measured markets.
Online display advertising has overtaken search advertising as the fastest-growing online ad format in Europe, according to the IAB's figures, with mobile figures being included in the survey for the first time. The IAB says mobile, video, and social media have all contributed to the growth of display advertising.

Apple's app subs u-turn isn't enough, says FT's Grimshaw | News | New Media Age

Apple’s climb down on in-app subscription fees has not gone far enough, according to FT.com MD Rob Grimshaw, speaking at the Open Mobile Summit in London.

Grimshaw made the comments this afternoon after Apple’s climb down on its earlier in-app subscription policy, which curbed publishers’ ability to sell subscriptions via iOS apps, was made public.

Apple had previously required publishers to offer subscriptions via the App Store at the “same price or less than it is offered outside the app”, where it also charged 30% commission.
