Enterprise Mobile App Development Success Comes in Small Steps

Enterprise Mobile App Development Success Comes in Small Steps | Mobile Device and Computing | Scoop.it
RT @johnmobilecast: Enterprise Mobile App Development Success Comes in Small Steps http://t.co/o68CElJ6dC #MobileDev #AppDev Please RT.
VendorFit's insight:

Despite alarmist press that is constantly signaling the "end" of the mobile era,  the peak of mobile activity is yet to come.  App development is a critical part of nearly every business marketing strategy, and it remains one of the most cost-effective methods to get a marketing message in front of users on a daily basis.

App development and success isn't easy though, it requires a long investment and a committment from a company to support the app and market it to increase utilization.

This article is certainly right in its key conceit that the businesses that are able to succeed in the next decade will be those that devleop a core competency in mobile devices.  Executing those ideas will come down to either teams of developers, or app development platforms like Mobilesmith.

Enjoy Guaranteed Mobile Security with Huawei's AnyOffice Mobile Security ...
VendorFit's insight:

If you've been following the tech sector for the last two years, the catastrophic decline of Research in Motion hs been a story to watch.  The failure of Blackberry is enigmatic of a larger industry-wide shift away from corporate mobile devices to a BYOD system that allows employees to utilize their personal devices on the job.  This openness also creates security risks, with 61% of all companies claiming that mobile security has become their single-largest security concern.  Huwei claims that they have an industry-leading Mobile Application Management security suite, although they are relatively new to the industry, and stiff competition from other enterprises should drive prices down.

VendorFit's insight:

Mobile Device Management is a complex problem for large businesses.  Most employees expect to be able to utilize their own mobile devices on company networks, but MDM companies must figure out how to allow those devices into the corporate ecosystem without compromising security.  Mobiletron is attempting to add BYOD features that are in-demand for business clients, including document editing and easier sharing of files throughout the office.  The next generation of MDM suites will probably avoid locking or modifying hardware capabilities while keeping device users within particular applications that have been secured and are separated from the broader network data stream.

VendorFit's insight:

While this is a well-curated and well-rounded collection of links and articles that will be useful for beginning developers, the section on HTML5 should be required reading for anyone that works on mobile applications.  It has been years since the adoption of HTML5 as the standard for cross-platform browser applications, but proprietary browser coding and a lack of developer resources are hampering efforts by developers to produce high quality "platform neutral" applications.

10 Things To Consider When Choosing A Cloud Service Provider - Business 2 Community

10 Things To Consider When Choosing A Cloud Service Provider - Business 2 Community | Mobile Device and Computing | Scoop.it
10 Things To Consider When Choosing A Cloud Service Provider http://t.co/jV8WJavFHr #Tech #Mobile #Cloud
VendorFit's insight:

Even though cloud computing is becoming more of a commodity, thanks to the standardization of services and the prevalence of cloud computing in modern businesses, there are still major differences between the many providers of cloud services.

Some things to look for when choosing a cloud services provider:

  • You need to choose a reliable provider that has a high percentage of up-time, otherwise you will experience frequent service interruptions that can erode the value of the service.
  • Your internal IT staff needs to be able to manage the cloud services, so they should have an easy-to-use dashboard and ticketing process.
  • Cloud services should be customer-driven.  If you can't justify the integration of cloud services with increased revenue or higher margins, then you shouldn't be making the shift to cloud computing.

What’s happening right now with mobile enterprise application development

What’s happening right now with mobile enterprise application development | Mobile Device and Computing | Scoop.it
46 percent of organizations are building or plan to build two or more business-to-enterprise applications in the next six months.
VendorFit's insight:

It really isn't surprising that the vast majority of polled businesses planned to expand into the mobile sector within the next year.  What is surprising, however, is Bloomberg's findings that many of these companies were planning to build more than one application, suggesting that companies are trying to saturate the market quickly to prevent the expansion of their rivals.

What this article suggests is important to marketers and developers.  For one, the business to enterprise space is becoming crowded, and there are fewer obstacles to companies creating applications.  Platforms like Kony are allowing an unprecedented scale of releases, and this is creating pressure for companies to differentiate themselves with both the quality and the quantity of their applications.

There's a New 'Local' Industry in the Making - Street Fight

There's a New 'Local' Industry in the Making - Street Fight | Mobile Device and Computing | Scoop.it
There's a New 'Local' Industry in the Making Street Fight The industry continued to outgrow its legacy media foundation as new technology's forced innovators and incumbents alike to think critically about the services they provide and the means...
VendorFit's insight:

One of the most important tech trends of 2013 was the hyper-localization of different technology companies.  Uber proved that a company could take an extremely local service (taxi driving) and bring them to the mobile era.  Small and medium sized businesses need to think locally as well - and this is increasingly possible because of gradually decreasing enterprise software costs.  Some industries will struggle with this new paradigm, particularly industries like retail that are dependent on a broad supply chain and many different "layers" of control, but they will adapt by breaking into functional units.

Mobile device management for secured file sharing using FileCloud

Mobile device management for secured file sharing using FileCloud | Mobile Device and Computing | Scoop.it
Topics on cloud, private cloud, enterprise file sharing and syncing.
VendorFit's insight:

Thousands of companies are looking into ways to secure their data, especially to protect integrity of data in an increasingly mobile working environment.  One solution to this problem has been the use of cloud-storage services, popularized by DropBox and Amazon.  FileCloud is a cloud storage company that offers a wide variety of scaling solutions to enterprise-level companies that want information to be securely accessible from anywhere in the world (and on most devices)

Benefits of FileCloud

  • Very scalable, pay for only the amount of data storage you actually need
  • Set user permissions to create different levels of sharing between users
  • Remotely revoke access to files for employees that leave the organization (without having to gain physical access to the devices)

FileCloud is still limited in many of its functions, and file synchronization works slightly slower than other tools with more elaborate hosting systems, but it appeals to companies that place a premium on data security.

The Mobility Hub - Charlotte Erdmann - Mobile Device Management: Go Central!

The Mobility Hub - Charlotte Erdmann - Mobile Device Management: Go Central! | Mobile Device and Computing | Scoop.it
Companies face the challenge of having to securely connect different mobile platforms to the enterprise network. To minimize security risks, devices should be managed centrally.
VendorFit's insight:

Gone are the days when companies issued employees corporate mobile devices.  Cell phones and tablets have a very personal relationship with users, so most employees bring their own devices into the workplace.  Keeping all of these devices managed from a central hub is a security imperative in some workplaces.  Software packages that can secure personal mobile devices, disabling certain features and monitoring traffic, is part of a $3.9 billion industry in the United States.  There is definitely room in this sector for more entrants, so expect additional MDM software competition soon.

Mobile Device & Plan Provisioning: Automate the Provisioning Process

Mobile Device & Plan Provisioning: Automate the Provisioning Process | Mobile Device and Computing | Scoop.it
Centralized device provisioning is a key element in best-practice management of your mobility lifecycle. Cass makes device provisioning painless for your users (or telecom staff).
VendorFit's insight:

2013 was a pretty incredible year for mobile device managers, so what will 2014 have in store?

For one, expect an increasing proportion of the workforce to expect the ability to use their own tablets and mobile devices at work.  Tablets were among the most popular items that were given as Christmas presents in 2013, so ownership rates have skyrocketed.

Additionally, companies (and the government) are shifting away from Blackberry BES because of RIM's uncertain future, and this is impacting organizations that need to find new solutions to device security and management on new systems like Android and iOS.
