Study Smarter – Take Notes And Highlight Text Within iBooks [iOS Tips] | Cult of Mac

Study Smarter – Take Notes And Highlight Text Within iBooks [iOS Tips] | Cult of Mac | MLearning | Scoop.it

Ebooks are all the rage these days, and your iPad is a perfect device for reading them. Textbooks, too, are becoming de riguer for many students in college and even high school, as educators, schools, and publishers find a greater demand for electronic instructional materials.

But studying from a book requires interacting with the text at a greater level than just reading it, of course, as students need to keep track of specific passages, or comment on them as they relate to their learning or lecture notes. Most eReading apps, like Nook and Kindle, have these features as well, but iBooks definitely has the most well designed, so let’s take a look at how to use it to study with your electronic books."

iBooks not only speaks the selection but it can also highlight text in different colors and create notes. Great way to provide the tools for using reading strategies to electronic text.

Creating ePub books in apps like Pages, Creative Book Builder allows you to create your own texts for students.

Steven Blomdale's curator insight, March 6, 2013 7:35 PM

In schools across Australia there is strong support for linking learning in Technologies with learning literacy skills. Learning in Technologies places a high priority on accurate and unambiguous communication (ACARA, 2013).Implementing digital technologies in learning areas such as English allows special education teachers to facilitate and accommodate the learning needs of students. This is achieved through integrating assistive devices such as the iPad and its applications to develop critical literacy skills needed in the 21st century.  Consequently special education teacher have a better opportunity to develop important General capabilities such as literacy (LIT) to allows student to become literate as they develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions to interpret and use language confidently for learning and communicating in and out of school and for participating effectively in society (ACARA, 2013).

This website suggests various applications that can be used on the ipad to assist special needs students. The list of  applications were selected to improve and develop students reading, writing and spelling. They engage the students through making the activities, fun and engaging, which I think is important when teaching special needs students.

Gewoon eens proberen!

The future of the book: part 654 | FutureBook | MLearning | Scoop.it

What is the future of the book? In this interesting but flawed piece from the New York Times, David Streitfeld notes that the 'book' is apparently "embedded so deeply in the collective unconsciousness that no one can bear to leave it behind".

He says much that has been produced digitally so far is hampered by skeuomorphism.

A Must See Visual Featuring The 5 Levels of Student Engagement ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

A Must See Visual Featuring The 5 Levels of Student Engagement ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | MLearning | Scoop.it

"After posting about the "10 ways to get your students engaged" here is another good visual I learned about from Mindshift and which outlines different levels of engagement. As I have already  argued elsewhere here in this blog, getting today's students deeply engaged (the first level of engagement below) in the learning experience taking place in class is not an easy task. Unless students see a direct relevance between  what they are going to learn and how that information will help them them in their actual life , it becomes hard to hook and maintain their attention. Proponents of socio-cultural linguistics emphasize the importance of "context" in learning. Learning materials that are contextualized and tailored to speak to the immediate context of the learners are more likely to get students engaged and hence increase their rate of retention and comprehensibility."

I love this post and its 21st Century implications.  Yes, the old wooded or even newer plastic, solo student desks are becoming a relic of the past.  With collaborative learning environments, mobile learning, project based learning, etc. those neat little rows of desks lined up in single file are a thing of the past.  However, if you're stumped on a practical alternative, I remain a fan of the harkness table that has a long, successful independent school history.  Here is a link if you're not familiar with the harkness table:
