Black in Latin America: Henry Louis Gates Jr. Talks to NPR

Black in Latin America: Henry Louis Gates Jr. Talks to NPR | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it
The descendants of slaves brought to Latin and South America, says Gates, don't identify as white or black the way many Americans do. In Brazil, there are 134 categories of blackness to describe someone of African descent.

"[They say], 'I'm not black. I'm murano [or] I'm kubuku,' he says. "You could say that these societies have refused to be locked into this ridiculous binary opposition between black and white the way we are here in America, and they've socially constructed race or ethnicity in a more subtle way than we could ever imagine."
In each of the countries Gates examined, there were also policies enacted to "whiten" the complexion of the country soon after receiving an influx of slaves. In Brazil for instance, 4 million white Europeans and 185,000 Japanese immigrants were allowed into the country between 1884 and 1939. Cuba and Mexico also had similar policies in place.

"They were trying to do two things," says Gates. "They wanted to bring in white families so that the white population would increase. But they also assumed, because so many of these indentured immigrants would be men, that interracial sexual liaisons would ensue -- and indeed they did. So whitening was to be achieved in two ways: through white people marrying white people and a browning movement, when a series of racial gradations would be created through interracial sexuality."

steffiquah's curator insight, July 16, 2014 7:29 AM

It is sad that nowadays, your skin colour would define your life. For example, if you are not the same colour as the rest of the people, you would be boycotted. How people treat you, or how you treat people even, is being controlled by just a mere colour. Isnt that sad? People should not be discriminated against something that is not their fault. Humans are humans, whether black or white. No one deserves to feel insecure or unwelcomed just because of their skin colour. No one deserves to be treated with disrespect either.

The topic is very serious, very sad and Bubba's over the top anger is hilarious at the same time.

"And let’s continue with the policy of reducing human beings to nothing more than their economic function. Nothing else matters – not culture, not sentiment, not family, not history, not morals. Just how much goddamned labor one goddamned person can produce per goddamned hour, for whatever goddamned price businesses want to pay – and not a goddmaned penny more!" -Bubba

Texas will tally multiracial students but not report their scores separately

Texas continues to only hold three racial subgroups accountable: whites, blacks and Hispanics...

It's up to each state, however, to decide which racial groups to measure separately in its ratings. The Texas Education Agency has said a racial group should make up at least 10 percent of the state's student population to trigger inclusion.

Any California school with more than 100 multiracial students will be measured on those students' performance.

Many Hispanics, for instance, feel discounted because they cannot be considered multiracial

"If you're trying to understand school performance under a microscope, mixed race is not really helpful," he said. "Multiracial doesn't act in a particular way."

I always find that these articles are written with a straight face at an absurd idea. The underling absurd idea is that different "races" perform differently and the performance solutions need to be applied to a "racial" group. It's not about "races". It's about socio-economic income level and culture differences. The question is never posed that students could be tested by ZIP code and tutors could be sent in to the lower performing ZIP codes.
Community Village Sites's comment, July 28, 2011 4:04 PM
Why does Texas hold only three racial subgroups accountable: whites, blacks and Hispanics?

Why does a "racial" group have to make up at least 10 percent of the state's student population to trigger inclusion. That sounds like Leave Children Behind if they are not statistically significant.

Why does California require more than 100 multiracial students before they measure those students' performance?

Why is it that Hispanics cannot be considered multiracial?
