Community Village Activist: Unusual 'Race' check boxes

Community Village Activist: Unusual 'Race' check boxes | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

I love that there is no check box for 'White' but instead European American, which acknowledges the foreignness of European Americans in the Americas. Although the check boxes are fairly comprehensive here, I'm disheartened to see there is no check box for Native American - on a form which was created on Native American land. This implies that Native Americans have been culturally erased. This is the written outcome from the cultural and physical genocide of Native Americans. Amerindians make up less than 1% of U.S. population (and within that almost half are of mixed ethnic heritage), but as First Nation Peoples they should NEVER be overlooked or forgotten.

A Non-Immigrant Story: Does it make me any less Latina?

"I once asked her why we never learned to speak spanish. It was with saddened eyes, head down, when she told me “It was because I was spanked in school for not knowing how to speak English.” Spanked as in literally spanked on the hand with rulers for not speaking English as a 5 year old."

The Nature of Race: How Scientists Think and Teach about Human Difference

The Nature of Race: How Scientists Think and Teach about Human Difference

~ Ann Morning (author) More about this product
List Price: $26.95
Price: $25.38
You Save: $1.57 (6%)

"What do Americans think "race" means? What determines one's race--appearance, ancestry, genes, or culture? How do education, government, and business influence our views on race? To unravel these complex questions, Ann Morning takes a close look at how scientists are influencing ideas about race through teaching and textbooks. Drawing from in-depth interviews with biologists, anthropologists, and undergraduates, Morning explores different conceptions of race--finding for example, that while many sociologists now assume that race is a social invention or "construct," anthropologists and biologists are far from such a consensus. She discusses powerful new genetic accounts of race, and considers how corporations and the government use scientific research--for example, in designing DNA ancestry tests or census questionnaires--in ways that often reinforce the idea that race is biologically determined. Widening the debate about race beyond the pages of scholarly journals, The Nature of Race dissects competing definitions in straightforward language to reveal the logic and assumptions underpinning today's claims about human difference.

Complicating the 2010 US Census Native Data

Complicating the 2010 US Census Native Data | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"The lead headline for the census press release is "2010 Census Shows Nearly Half of American Indians and Alaska Natives Report Multiple Races." I already, right there, see that as problematic, wrought with assumptions, and loaded with colonial underpinnings. But we all know I think that about most things. ha.

To "over-sensitive" and "easily offended" me, the headline is a commentary on the "realness" of the American Indian population, loaded with western/colonial conceptions of blood quantum and racial purity as markers for belonging and identity. This, to me, screams "Real Indians are disappearing!!!". But since we have been "disappearing" for 500 years, despite our growing population numbers, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. The real number is 44% identify as more than one race, which is different to me than "nearly half". They could have just as easily said "56% of AI/AN population identifies solely as Native!" which tells a very different story. The majority of our peeps still identify as only AI or AN. We are not disappearing."

University of Leicester Study provides first genetic evidence of long-lived African presence within Britain

"Although most of Britain's one million people who define themselves as "Black or Black British" owe their origins to immigration from the Caribbean and Africa from the mid-twentieth century onwards, in reality, there has been a long history of contact with Africa. Africans were first recorded in the north 1800 years ago, as Roman soldiers defending Hadrian’s Wall."

American Indian Kids Fight to Maintain Identity

American Indian Kids Fight to Maintain Identity | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

This article has a photo of the registration form with the 'racial' check boxes which is pretty comprehensive except that NATIVE AMERICAN is missing. What an embarrassing over-site. I assume whoever made it forgot about Native Americans because they make up around 1% of U.S. population? On another note, this is the first form I've seen that has European American instead of 'White'. Amazing. I've been arguing that using European American is better because it states the foreignness of European Americans. So they got that right but then left off Native Americans :| #smh

Pre-order @Baratunde's book #HowToBeBlack.

Pre-order @Baratunde's book #HowToBeBlack. | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"Part autobiography, part stand-up routine, part contemporary political analysis, and astute all over, 'How to Be Black' might do more to expose and explore the shifting dynamics of race in America than all the Pew data of the past decade. Reading this book made me both laugh and weep with poignant recognition. Baratunde Thurston has given us a hysterical, irreverent exploration of one of America’s most painful and enduring issues. He captures the alchemy of familial narratives, community socialization, and individual volition that makes blackness a complex performance of the self. 'How to be Black' is the must read text of the so-called post-racial moment."
