My Experience on the Indian-Negro Color Line

My Experience on the Indian-Negro Color Line | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"Classroom discussions about race motivated me, at the age of 46, to reclaim my Indian ancestry by having my birth certificate changed from “Negro” to “American Indian.” The experience was emotionally overwhelming as I had been denied my birthright as an E. Pequot-Nottoway. Changing my birth certificate was not because I was ashamed of my multiracial identity; it was an affirmation of my survival as an Indian and an act of self-determination in a country that has gone so far to erase my ancestry from history."

Recovering History, Constructing Race: The Indian, Black, and White Roots of Mexican Americans

Recovering History, Constructing Race: The Indian, Black, and White Roots of Mexican Americans | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"The history of Mexican Americans is a history of the intermingling of races—Indian, White, and Black. This racial history underlies a legacy of racial discrimination against Mexican Americans and their Mexican ancestors that stretches from the Spanish conquest to current battles over ending affirmative action and other assistance programs for ethnic minorities. Asserting the centrality of race in Mexican American history, Martha Menchaca here offers the first interpretive racial history of Mexican Americans, focusing on racial foundations and race relations from prehispanic times to the present."

Multiracial Identity [Film]

Multiracial Identity [Film] | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"Explores the social, political and religious impact of the multiracial movement.

Multiracial people are the fastest growing demographic in America, yet there is no official political recognition for mixed-race people. MULTIRACIAL IDENTITY explores the social, political, and religious impact of the multiracial movement and the lived experience of being multiracial.

Different racial and cultural groups see multiracialism differently. For some Whites multiracialism represents the pollution of the White race. For some Blacks it represents an attempt to escape Blackness. And for some Asians, Latinos, and Arabs, multiracialism can be seen as ill equipped to perpetuate cultural traditions and therefore represents the dilution of the culture.

Also features commentary from noted scholars, Rainier Spencer, Naomi Zack, Aliya Saperstein, Aaron Gullickson, Susan J. Hayflick and Pastor Randall Sanford."

Ethnic groups say 'white' isn't enough on the 2010 census

"There is no such thing as white culture," said Thaddeus Radzilowski

"It's unfair because we are not treated as white in society and by the government, but we also don't qualify as minorities to get the benefits of some programs" such as minority contracts, said Imad Hamad, regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

Ancestry: On the long form in 2000, given to one of every six people, respondents were asked to list up to two ancestries, such as Irish, Polish, Lebanese, etc. But the census tabulated only those ancestries from Europe and the Middle East. Ancestries from other regions of the world -- such as Asia and Africa -- were classified as races.

This question was eliminated for the 2010 census.

Talking Race w/ Social Critic/Legal Scholar Dorothy Roberts

"Listen to a GREAT interview (10/11/2011) with Dr. Dorothy Roberts on the podcast "Is That Your Child" with host Michelle McCrary.

Dr. Roberts talks about her book and gives some insight into her personal life and her forethcoming projects.

Dr. Roberts is the author of "Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-First Century" and was a participant in the CMRS 2010 panel titled "A Rx for the FDA: Ethical Dilemmas for Multiracial People in Race-Based Medicine."

Ms. McCrary says "..this was a book that really, completely, changed and challenged everything that I knew and I thought I knew about race. And I thank you for that, because it’s just one of those books that really, really kind of changes your life in a way because it sort of opens things up and makes you think about the world a completely different way, it’s a really powerful book.""

In this second installment of our holiday ITYC Rewind series, we revisit another one of our early interviews with Ruby of Growing Up Blackxican.
