Mexican, Filipina, German | Elizabeth Harvey | San Francisco Bay Area | Hapa Voice

Mexican, Filipina, German | Elizabeth Harvey | San Francisco Bay Area | Hapa Voice | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"Hi everyone! My name is Elizabeth Harvey and am from the San Francisco Bay Area.

My grandma was German and Mexican, raised in Tampico, Mexico, and she migrated to the US in the late 60′s. My father is German and Mexican, and my mother is Filipino. My grandparents on my mother’s side originated from Mindanao, Philippines.

I am very grateful for being exposed to my culture at such an early age. One of the first conversations I can remember with my parents was about how my family comes from both Mexico and the Philippines and how they are similar historically (since both countries were at once colonized by Spain), and how Tagalog (the main language of the Philippines) has a lot of Spanish influence.

I enjoyed growing up in the Bay Area, because I was able to experience different ethnic foods and go to a lot of cultural events. At home my mom and dad cooked both traditional Filipino and Mexican dishes. My dad would play traditional Spanish love songs and show me how beautiful Spanish sounds. At school I had ethnically diverse friends, and despite growing up in neighborhoods that were ethnically diverse, I did not always feel included in mainstream American culture."

Elizabeth Warren and the Politics of Racial Passing | Marcia Dawkins

Elizabeth Warren and the Politics of Racial Passing | Marcia Dawkins | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"This year's election season is "the battle of the racial passers." While many have fixated on the authenticity of a multiracial President Obama and a Latino Mitt Romney, questions of racial identity and passing have taken center stage in the Massachusetts Senate race between GOP incumbent Scott Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren as well.

To put it bluntly, Brown is accusing Warren of "passing," or representing herself as a member of a different racial group than the one to which she belongs. These accusations are to be expected, as I wrote in my new book, Clearly Invisible: Racial Passing and the Color of Cultural Identity, which deals with how people from all walks of life reconcile who they are with who society tells them to be in a society where racial definitions are constantly changing.

...

When the votes are counted this November, Warren's racial identity will be less significant than the fact that questions about her identity persist as means of disqualification. Such questions demonstrate the ongoing problems of racial identification in the twenty-first century.

But, if we're willing to get past the noise and listen to Warren, we may also find some answers. Answers to questions like: What are you? Who is most qualified to respond? What evidence can be considered? Warren's identity also provides a new answer to the old question about the definition of race. Is race real? Is it biological? Is it sociological? For Warren the answer is complicated. Race is clearly invisible -- a fact of life that may also be, to some degree, a fiction."

growing up Latino | Abagond

growing up Latino | Abagond | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"The following is based mainly on Dr Beverly Tatum’s excellent book, “Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” (1997). She talks only about Spanish-speaking Latinos who grow up in America (the U.S.):

Being Latino is not a matter of nation or race. It is a matter of culture, of belonging to a Latin American culture. After all, you can be black or white or Indian or mixed and still be Latino. You can be Mexican or Cuban or American and still be Latino.

Three stages that Latinos (and other people of colour) go through growing up in America:

1. unexamined ethnic identity – your ethnic identity is not a big deal, you barely think about it.
2. ethnic identity search – it becomes a big deal, mainly because of experiences at school. You come to terms with what it means for you to be a member of your ethnic group. This can take years.
3. achieved ethnic identity - you have a clear, positive sense of your ethnic identity."

More Than Black? Multiracial Identity and the New Racial Order: G. Reginald Daniel

Book Description from Amazon

"In the United States, anyone with even a trace of African American ancestry has been considered black. Even as the twenty-first century opens, a racial hierarchy still prevents people of color, including individuals of mixed race, from enjoying the same privileges as Euro-Americans. In this book, G. Reginald Daniel argues that we are at a cross-roads, with members of a new multiracial movement pointing the way toward equality. Tracing the centuries-long evolution of Eurocentrism, a concept geared to protecting white racial purity and social privilege, Daniel shows how race has been constructed and regulated in the United States. The so-called one-drop rule (i.e., hypodescent) obligated individuals to identify as black or white, in effect erasing mixed-race individuals from the social landscape. For most of our history, many mixed-race individuals of African American descent have attempted to acquire the socioeconomic benefits of being white by forming separate enclaves or "passing." By the 1990s, however, interracial marriages became increasingly common, and multiracial individuals became increasingly political, demanding institutional changes that would recognize the reality of multiple racial backgrounds and challenging white racial privilege. "More Than Black?" regards the crumbling of the old racial order as an opportunity for substantially more than an improvement in U.S. race relations; it offers no less than a radical transformation of the nation's racial consciousness and the practice of democracy. Author note: G. Reginald Daniel is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara."
