ANONYMOUS – Mixed marriage folktale, Late 19th Century | Lizzie Mariko | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"From merely curious to outright threatened, reactions to foreign influence sparked a concern for the purity of Japanese culture in the mid-19th century. This woodblock print, illustrating the birth of a baby to a Japanese mother and a White father, ultimately issues a warning against mixed marriages. Remarkably strong and incredibly hairy- traits inherited from the paternal line- this child embodies the perceived dangers of interracial relationships."

angry reader of the week: vivian foung | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"What are you?
Half Asian. A recent college graduate. And a whole host of other things as well, but there are too many to go into here.

What makes you angry?
Racism. I know a lot of people say this, but for good reason. I don't think racism will ever truly disappear, but I'm hoping that one day I can look back and say, "Wow! People are so much kinder to each other now than they were 50 years ago."

Clines

Clines | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"One crucial innovation in reconceptualizing genotypic and phenotypic variation was anthropologist C. Loring Brace's observation that such variations, insofar as it is affected by natural selection, slow migration, or genetic drift, are distributed along geographic gradations or clines.[59] In part this is due to isolation by distance. This point called attention to a problem common to phenotype-based descriptions of races (for example, those based on hair texture and skin color): they ignore a host of other similarities and differences (for example, blood type) that do not correlate highly with the markers for race. Thus, anthropologist Frank Livingstone's conclusion, that since clines cross racial boundaries, "there are no races, only clines".[60]"

Parenting Awareness: ‘Race’ Talk #2 | Bicultural Mom™

Parenting Awareness: ‘Race’ Talk #2 | Bicultural Mom™ | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

"Why is it important to show your children racial variation? Because I believe that much of the reason why we classify each other into such narrow boxes is because we don’t see or acknowledge the variations in each group. A lot of this is because of media portrayals of racial groups and ethnic groups as caricatures. As being defined in only ONE way. This is something that I want to dismantle and something that I feel is important for my biracial daughter to understand early on."
