#LovingPortraits - Multiracial Media

#LovingPortraits - Multiracial Media | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it
On June 12, 1967, the United States Supreme Court issued its decision Loving vs. the State of Virginia, which held that laws outlawing interracial marriage were unconstitutional.  June 12, 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision, and to commemorate this momentous occasion Multiracial Media is featuring portraits of interracial couples from all corners of the globe (as anti-miscegenation laws were not unique to the U.S.).  So, wherever you live, we encourage you to send us your #LovingPortrait and we’ll feature it on this page. The Heart of Whiteness: Ijeoma Oluo Interviews Rachel Dolezal, the White Woman Who Identifies as Black

The Heart of Whiteness: Ijeoma Oluo Interviews Rachel Dolezal, the White Woman Who Identifies as Black | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it

INTERVIEW: Ijeoma Oluo (left) with Rachel Dolezal and her son in their kitchen. RAJAH BOSE

Community Village Sites's insight:

The thing is, Dolezal is not redefining race, she is going with the definition that many, including sociologists and anthropologists use: "race is a social construct."

Dolezal has redefined her identity.

With all the anger against Dolezal, we see why it's important to see both sides of how race is defined, the full story that "The Nature of Race" by Ann Morning describes.

Quotes from article:
"I find her blanket justification of "race is a social construct" overly simplistic. "Race is just a social construct" is a retort I get quite often from white people who don't want to talk about black issues anymore.
...
the anger that I had toward her began to melt away. Dolezal is simply a white woman who cannot help but center herself in all that she does—including her fight for racial justice. And if racial justice doesn't center her, she will redefine race itself in order to make that happen."

Interracial couple gets harassed on date night

Interracial couple gets harassed on date night | Mixed American Life | Scoop.it
Warning: Graphic language

https://youtu.be/-dO7sLwdtks

Disturbing video shows an interracial couple being harassed by a bigot who calls a Caucasian woman, "the lowest rung of humanity."

The video, posted to World Star Hip Hop Monday, shows a black man and a white woman sharing a meal together at an undisclosed restaurant when the man begins the racially-motivated rant.

“Look at this f-----y in a black-owned restaurant,” the man filming says to himself. He then asks the pair if they are a couple.

After the diner says yes, his harasser continues: “You had to go to the lowest rung of humanity?...If they are even humans. Like are you that weak?”

“Just the fact that ya’ll have the audacity to sit in a black-owned restaurant, you know, I had to ask,” continues the unidentified bigot. “What’s wrong with you?"

“What was it that made you that weak -- that you'd get on your knees and bow to this less of a female -- that's lesser than a black woman in every way,” he adds.

But the diner doesn't lose his cool.

“Luckily for you, I am not getting offended," the man responds.
