Teachers and students in the Harrisonville School District recently received more than $2,200 in grants from the Harrisonville Public School Foundation

 Harrisonville Early Childhood Center Library Media Specialist Jodi Fischer for the 1,000 Book Club program, which will encourage early reading by providing bookbags and incentives to families to read 1,000 books with their children prior to kindergarten. This grant is funded through the Cade Filer Memorial Teacher Grant.

Reading is an adventure that has been taken to the swamp level in Tina Kauffman’s library. The fourth-year librarian coordinates with Cole R-1 classroom teachers each year to create a reading theme.

Kauffman has found the position of librarian also means she is a resource for the community as well as students and teachers seeking more information. 

"I'm kind of the hub," she said. 

That means she needs to keep up with a variety of topics. 

And she gets to know each student's interests to guide what books she orders in the future.

Belinda Carol Easton Joseph was born on February 10, 1953 to Arlon and Beulah Easton in Nevada, Missouri. She lived in Stockton and Nevada throughout her childhood years. She attended Franklin Elementary and Nevada Jr./Sr.

In 2000, Belinda left Hazelwood to accept a position in the Orchard Farm School District in their gifted education program. While at Orchard Farm, she got a Master’s Degree +60 hours from Lindenwood University, was a literacy coach and reading specialist, library media specialist, and then back to gifted education K-8. She was elected Teacher of the Year and received the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award. She retired from the Orchard Farm School District in 2013 when she learned of the return of her cancer.

The Lebanon High School library is going to get a decades-overdue remodel thanks to the generosity of people in the community.
Floyd Pentlin's insight:

 Lowery said his goal for the future is to hire someone who will act as both a librarian and English teacher. 

Along with the physical upgrades, the library will get some additional technology. 

Thirty iPads and 30 Google Chromebooks will be available for students to check out and use while they are in the library . 

"We want our library to strive to become a globally connected learning commons where students, teachers and staff collaborate in a technology-rich environment and engage in activities that promote multiple literacies and responsible, professional participation in the social web and in the local community," Lowery said, reading the library 's mission statement. "Isn't that beautiful? Who would not want that for their own child? As an educator, who would not want that for your children?"

Did you hear about the Moberly elementary librarian who wrote outstanding young adult books? If you were like me, well, ya missed that one. Let me set the scene: two reporters hard at work. Imagine them, seated behind their massive 1960s-era desks. The wood paneling surrounding them, engulfing their space. The florescent lights flickering; maybe there was some thunder in a distance. Okay, no thunder, but “yes” to the 1960s-era decorating. Anyways, Connie asks me if I heard that Mr. Katcher released a new book, “Everyone Dies in the End.” I was slightly startled. I thought I knew who was writing in the area. I probably did 15 years ago — when I was cool and hip.

Having been a classroom teacher for 15 years, I was both excited and apprehensive about my new position as an elementary library media specialist at Mason and Meadow Lane elementary schools. There were many opportunities to be explored, but I was unsure about navigating the transition to Library Media Specialist successfully.

I do have times when I feel overwhelmed, but knowing I have a cooperative resource a phone call or an email away has made a tremendous difference. If each of us were as committed to cooperation as Kim Rues, our world would be a much better place.

Stephanie Grable loves books, and she knows people going through treatment for cancer could use an escape while in the hospital.

One school librarian, who is surrounded by books all day, is now collecting books.  And she'll be donating them to a good cause.

The library at Humboldt Elementary School is Stephanie Grable's library, and she shares her love of reading with her students.


But after a visit to her mother-in-law at Heartland Hospital's Cancer Center, she had a new idea.

"I noticed on my way out in the waiting room, people were going through books," Mrs. Grable said.  "There were only like 12 books and they were well worn.
