ST. JAMES— Potosi High School was one of four schools in the Meramec Region to receive a Meramec Region Coalition for Roadway Safety Subcommittee mini-grant to support its Project Graduation event. The grant included a $200 cash award to assist with the event along with $200 worth of incentives, including several Arrive Alive t-shirts and blankets to be given as incentives throughout the night. Pictured from left to right are Potosi High School students Jacob Reid, Thomas Gross, Kelsie Mills and Tyler Niggermann, Librarian Deanna Mercille, Meramec Regional Planning Commission Executive Director Bonnie Prigge, students Alie Berry, Jesi Richards, Kaitlin Courtway and Brooklyn Short.  Harrisonville Early Childhood Center Library Media Specialist Jodi Fischer for the 1,000 Book Club program, which will encourage early reading by providing bookbags and incentives to families to read 1,000 books with their children prior to kindergarten. Reading is an adventure that has been taken to the swamp level in Tina Kauffman’s library. The fourth-year librarian coordinates with Cole R-1 classroom teachers each year to create a reading theme.

Kauffman has found the position of librarian also means she is a resource for the community as well as students and teachers seeking more information. 

"I'm kind of the hub," she said. 

That means she needs to keep up with a variety of topics. 

And she gets to know each student's interests to guide what books she orders in the future.

Carroll Public Library Director Kelly Fischbach has accepted a middle school position in Missouri, in the Ozarks region, and plans to move from Carroll in mid-July.

Fischbach's husband, Max, will retire from the Carroll Community School District as at-risk coordinator at the end of the school year.

The couple's decision to move, Kelly Fischbach said, is largely based on the location of the school - School of the Osage in Osage Beach, Mo. - to two of the Fischbachs' three daughters.

Life as a fan of baseball’s supposed “lovable losers” informs Justin Hamm’s baseball-themed poetry.

Hamm — the district librarian at North Callaway R-I schools — joked over the phone on Friday. “So I think it’s seeped into my psychology as a writer.”

The three pieces are included in Hamm’s first full-length book of poetry titled “Lessons in Ruin,” a catalogue of prose dealing with life as a Midwesterner, set to be released on Sept. 1. Hamm’s work touches on his experiences, feelings and attitudes as a lifelong Midwesterner.

Did you hear about the Moberly elementary librarian who wrote outstanding young adult books? If you were like me, well, ya missed that one. Let me set the scene: two reporters hard at work. Imagine them, seated behind their massive 1960s-era desks. The wood paneling surrounding them, engulfing their space. The florescent lights flickering; maybe there was some thunder in a distance. Okay, no thunder, but “yes” to the 1960s-era decorating. Anyways, Connie asks me if I heard that Mr. Katcher released a new book, “Everyone Dies in the End.” I was slightly startled. I thought I knew who was writing in the area. I probably did 15 years ago — when I was cool and hip.

Having been a classroom teacher for 15 years, I was both excited and apprehensive about my new position as an elementary library media specialist at Mason and Meadow Lane elementary schools. There were many opportunities to be explored, but I was unsure about navigating the transition to Library Media Specialist successfully.

I do have times when I feel overwhelmed, but knowing I have a cooperative resource a phone call or an email away has made a tremendous difference. If each of us were as committed to cooperation as Kim Rues, our world would be a much better place.

Stephanie Grable loves books, and she knows people going through treatment for cancer could use an escape while in the hospital.

One school librarian, who is surrounded by books all day, is now collecting books.  And she'll be donating them to a good cause.

The library at Humboldt Elementary School is Stephanie Grable's library, and she shares her love of reading with her students.


But after a visit to her mother-in-law at Heartland Hospital's Cancer Center, she had a new idea.

"I noticed on my way out in the waiting room, people were going through books," Mrs. Grable said.  "There were only like 12 books and they were well worn.
