After the Election: A To-Do List

After the Election: A To-Do List | Miscellaneous Articles | Scoop.it
Since the election results were announced, I haven’t mentioned them in any public forum. I was too overwhelmed, and I didn’t want to muddy the waters here; I wanted to stay focused on teaching.

But everywhere I look, the waters are plenty muddy. Over the past five days, the pain I’m hearing in the voices of friends, family members, and total strangers online, the acts of hate and violence I’m seeing on the news, they’re not letting up. And not using this platform to share my thoughts would be cowardly. It would be lazy. It would also be a wasted opportunity: Most of my readers are educators, people who will shape the next generation. So if I can influence those teachers in any way, I have a responsibility to give it my best shot.

I’d like to propose a few ideas for things educators can do to move us forward in a way that’s healing and productive.

Let me be clear: I’m not talking about moving ON, dismissing what has happened, or “getting over it.” I have seen too much heartbreak, confusion and fear this week—on both sides—to suggest we move on. I’m talking about forward motion, the work we have ahead of us.

all these things we should remember to do for they are aspects of teaching we often forget in our quest to teach our subjects. We too often forget that we are teaching kids (not robots)with feelings and fears, family problems, and they don't always want to learn what we are there to teach them. They sometime just need lessons on life.

MUST KNOW Camera Features for iPad & iPhone Photography | iPad Art Room

MUST KNOW Camera Features for iPad & iPhone Photography | iPad Art Room | Miscellaneous Articles | Scoop.it
“The best camera, is the one you have with you.” Chase Jarvis It’s a classic photographic mantra, a call to action for image-makers everywhere. And these days, the camera you are most likely to have with you is the one embedded in your smart phone.

But do you know how to use it? What about your students?

There are many great features built into our mobile devices for photography, and a myriad of apps to produce exciting visual imagery. While some teachers and students are experienced users creating highly original work using complex workflows and inventive techniques, in my workshops I am constantly amazed that it’s some of the most basic tips and tricks that get the most cheers, the practical solutions that are big wins for our classroom context.

So, here are six foundational tools built into the iPhone and iPad camera that all teachers and students should know.

Looks more like a walk down an exhibit hall of vendors than skill/talent tied to teaching & learning.
Rod Murray's comment, February 13, 7:21 PM
If every teacher had this skill set, that would dramatically change teaching and learning. The "vendors" are, contrary to your suggestion, mostly free technologies that can and do change teaching and learning.
Richard Whiteside's curator insight, February 19, 5:10 AM

These and many other tools are available. But if you are a teacher, what do you think? Is it really necessary to have all these skills? There is so much content readily available online and if you can organise to prepare materials in teams, or have access to a PLN on or offline, then you can share the load.

Some teachers and content creators have specific skills and their expertise can be used or accessed by anyone. Personally, I think it's good for teachers to be aware of the digital possibilities for their teaching context, but it is generally unrealistic for anyone to expect all teachers to become skilled in so many different areas.

Is it not better to pick fewer areas more relevant to you and focus on them? Be a master of a few areas useful to you, not a jack of all trades feeling stressed that you are master of none.

For those in Australia or places other than the UK who would like to understand more about what occurs in other places, this guide published in the UK aims to help develop a shared understanding of the teaching of computational thinking in schools. It presents a conceptual framework of computational thinking, describes pedagogic approaches for teaching and offers guides for assessment.
