Why Should Arts Organizations Focus on Social Bridging?

Why Should Arts Organizations Focus on Social Bridging? | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it
I live in New York City, a place with seemingly endless cultural opportunities. The problem is that the majority of these cultural experiences are designed to bring me closer to people I showed up ...
samuel bausson's insight:

These (social media) modern pillars of culture are designed to reinforce your personally curated vision of the world, but they don’t challenge you to see outside of it.

Arts organizations are, by inviting people to a shared space around provocative objects, in a unique position to connect (different) people in unexpected ways and should embrace their ability to do so.

The Harvard Labrary: A Design Experiment in Library Futures [Library journal] | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it

Opening up the Museum: Nina Simon @ TEDxSantaCruz

This TEDxSantaCruz talk is one of 16 surrounding our theme of "Open" at the second full-day TEDxSantaCruz event held September 15, 2012 at the Cabrillo Colle...

Active participation

Let's make museums embrace participatory culture

Treating artifacts as social objets. How to make ours collections opportunities for social interactions ? Bring to life the "big" conversations that we should have as communitiies. Design games, design confortable conversation places.

Museums that matter. People brought together through a work of art experience. How theses experiences transform how we are outside.

Let digital folk lead the way from digital to physical and back | Tate

Let digital folk lead the way from digital to physical and back | Tate | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it
Tijana Tasich, Web Producer at Tate, shares her review and personal thoughts on a talk by Fiona Romeo, Head of Design and Digital Media at the National Maritime Museum, London
samuel bausson's insight:

Luckily, evidence points in the direction that it is people who make change, not organisations, and a positive change needs the right people at the right time doing the right stuff. Easier said than done.

While she definitely wanted to champion and broaden the remit of ‘smart digital folks’ within the museum, she didn’t think she needed a digital strategy, but as she was expected to write one, she included best practice examples and used it to get a buy-in at the top of the organisation. She also used it as an opportunity to articulate new approaches, such as open-by-default and inclusive design.

To me, the most influential factor for the success of this digitally forced change at the National Maritime Museum was the willingness of the decision-makers in the museum to embrace this new way of thinking, move away from the idea of digital as a servant, and let highly digitally literate to lead the way into the ‘digital within physical’ future.

Construire la médiathèque… avec les habitants

samuel bausson's insight:

Social Usability checklist

Social Usability checklist | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it
Social Usability, like usability, is a quality attribute that assesses how easy social interactions are to make. The term “social usability” also refers to the methods for improving the ease of human-computer-human interactions during the design process.
Social Usability is defined by four properties (RICE):

-- Relations: How easy is it to find other people and connect to them? How easy is it to keep those connections active? How relevant are those connections?
-- Identity: How rich is one’s personal identity expression? How much are interests and passions expressed? How much are personal distinctive traits show? How much is privacy management detailed?
-- Communication: How fast can a message reach the other person? How many messages can one handle efficiently? How easy is it to handle conversations (1-to-1, 1-to-some, 1-to-many)?
-- Emergence of Groups: How easy is it to create groups, aggregate and talk around a common interest? How active are groups once established? How long do they last? How much is important to be part of a group?

Participation = Success?

Participation = Success? | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it

samuel bausson's insight:

extrait : "Perhaps the problem is not what we are/aren’t offering in terms of compensation for participation. I believe that there’s a communication gap right now between artists who want exposure and organizations who want nothing more than to build a community of creative participants.

Why don’t more artists participate in museums’ social media projects? Is there anyone who’s aggregating a list of websites/social media initiatives where organizations such as museums and galleries ask for participation, so that artists can take advantage of these promotional vehicles? Is the problem that artists don’t want to buy into these sorts of prompted projects? Is the marketing initiative which is inevitably tied into all participatory social media projects to blame?"

Culture Must Always Be a Commons | OpenGLAM

Culture Must Always Be a Commons | OpenGLAM | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it

We often speak of engaging audiences in what we do, but how much more engaged could our audiences be than if they held shared responsibility for the governance of our shared culture? If the direction of our industry were set not for the public, but with them?

At the heart of this Framework are three fundamental principles, which speak to unity and sustainability:

Equity – Everyone has a fair and just share of social and natural resources that belong to us together.

Sustainability – Our common wealth must be cared for so that it can sustain all living beings, including future generations.

Interdependence – Cooperation and connection in our communities, around our world, and with our living planet is essential for the future.

The Commons Framework suggests that there are four sets of behaviours that are intrinsic to the Commons:

Shared Governance – Everyone is engaged in gathering information, making decisions, and exercising power to steward common resources.

Deepened Responsibility – Together we claim the power to repair inequity, restore our common inheritance, and expand opportunities for human fulfillment and planetary resilience.

Belonging – A more expansive view of belonging fosters broader understandings of what ownership means and new structures for how it works.

Co-Producing – A spirit of common purpose lets us realize that abundance, not scarcity, prevails when we invite wider participation in our endeavors.

I want to create a world in which people of all background walk into our fantastic museums, archives and libraries with confidence, with a sense of entitlement and with a sense of responsibility. I want people to talk about how dynamic, relevant and open our sector has become. I hope that over the next few months we can debate these ideas here and elsewhere, and that ultimately, we work together to transform what culture means to the people who create it.
