Tate Social Media Communication Strategy 2011–12

Goals :
1. Be one of the world’s leading social media platforms for culture
2. Engage current audiences in innovative ways and build new online communities
3. Communicate through many voices from across the organisation
4. Distribute its content where audiences are active online
5. Direct traffic to the Tate website
6. Direct footfall to the four Tate galleries
7. Integrate its social media channels into its marketing campaigns
8. Generate sales across its income streams
9. Encourage fans to act as advocates for Tate
10. Build developmental audiences
11. Increase awareness of Tate’s key strategic messages

What’s the point of a museum website?

What's the point of a museum website ?

"In a world of Facebook and YouTube, why would anyone come to a museum website?" asks Koven J. Smith (@5easypieces), director of technology at the Denver Art Museum

He argues for more "agile content development," where the experience of audiences is not limited by static websites : focus on being better enablers, not producers.

Social Media Dialogue | MuseumNext - Social Media, The latest web trends and technology for museums and galleries

Social Media Dialogue | MuseumNext - Social Media, The latest web trends and technology for museums and galleries | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it
As the social media explosion rolls on, more and more talk centres around the possibilities – and realities – of interaction, collaboration and dialogue.

Traditional ‘informative’ methods offer information about collections, ideas and histories, but at the far end of the spectrum there can also be transformative dialogic learning, ‘where the goal is to solve problems or create a shared horizon of understanding through activities ranging from conversation through to collaborative research or creative experiment (...)

The depth of these kinds of objectives is a far cry from a few question and answer posts on a Facebook page. They are bound up in the definition of the role, purpose and even operational structure of a museum. Corporate and PR messages do not rely on dialogue, but effective transformative learning surely does. Nurturing this level of communication requires a concerted effort to promote a culture of conversation amongst all museum professionals, not just those who operate the Twitter account.

More generally, why are museum websites hierarchical and concealing instead of flat and revealing? Another instance of Conway's Law? "Any organization which designs a system . . . will inevitably produce a design whose structure is a copy of the organization's communication structure."

Artfinder — Experience the art of discovery

Artfinder — Experience the art of discovery | Open P2P ReadWrite Museums • Free Culture • Co Creation | Scoop.it

"Can online art museum match the real thing ?"
http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/jonathanjonesblog/2011/mar/04/virtual-art-books-online-resources
'We’re not an online museum, we’re a website (and proud of it)"

This means it’s no longer about having a great Facebook strategy within your team. It’s about having an overall strategy for all media (new and traditional), connected with the activities you do and the expositions you host. A strategy that is interconnected and continuously attracts new visitors, retains the old ones and engages them with what you do.
