Social Usability, like usability, is a quality attribute that assesses how easy social interactions are to make. The term “social usability” also refers to the methods for improving the ease of human-computer-human interactions during the design process. Social Usability is defined by four properties (RICE): -- Relations: How easy is it to find other people and connect to them? How easy is it to keep those connections active? How relevant are those connections? -- Identity: How rich is one’s personal identity expression? How much are interests and passions expressed? How much are personal distinctive traits show? How much is privacy management detailed? -- Communication: How fast can a message reach the other person? How many messages can one handle efficiently? How easy is it to handle conversations (1-to-1, 1-to-some, 1-to-many)? -- Emergence of Groups: How easy is it to create groups, aggregate and talk around a common interest? How active are groups once established? How long do they last? How much is important to be part of a group?

Bibliothèque et prototypage
La "Harvard Library" propose un espace temporaire pop-up, une sorte de tribune publique, pour les projets étudiants, de conception sur l'avenir des bibliothèques.
Du lundi au samedi, le Labrary invite les passants à entrer, interagir avec les projets, ou tout simplement s'asseoir et travailler.
The Test Kitchen Library est développé par des professeurs Jeffrey Schnapp, Ann Whiteside, et Jeff Goldenson pour prototyper des idées de la bibliothèque.
«Le système de Harvard Library est en pleine transformation. Dans le cadre de ce processus, le système de laboratoire de l'innovation propre a financé le Test Kitchen Library pour une deuxième année. Non seulement comme un moteur de changement au niveau local, mais aussi comme un moteur de l'innovation sur la scène nationale et internationale. Le cours prend la forme d'un atelier consacré à la pensée critique et spéculative, les mains sur la résolution de problèmes, la fabrication et de décision. En plus de la bibliothèque de Harvard, le réseau des clients et des collaborateurs comprend les principaux systèmes de bibliothèques publiques dans le pays.

"On veut déplacer les idées, pour imaginer des lieux atypiques, des équipements de types forains, pas programmés, des usages impensés, oubliés. Repartir du vide, sans trop de contenu. Le vide est le premier des équipements publics, les squats artistiques l’ont démontré. Un bâtiment vide, abandonné par la société de consommation, est alors rempli par un besoin d’habiter, de créer.
