Sulphate emissions vastly understated in environmental impact study for Talvivaara mine

Sulphate emissions vastly understated in environmental impact study for Talvivaara mine | Mining the Indigenous North | Scoop.it

The police investigation into the emissions from the Talvivaara nickel mine in the northern community of Sotkamo is focusing on who provided the basic information for the environmental impact study, says Kari Pakanen of the economic crimes unit of the Oulu Police.
Toxic emissions into the environment were many times higher than had been predicted in the study. The environment permit was granted to Talvivaara on the basis of the report.
“In the environmental permit, the maximum level for sulphate was 130 milligrams a litre, as the company wished. In reality, the waste water emitted by the company has as much as 8,000 milligrams per litre”, says Sami Koivula, director of the Regional State Administrative Agency of Northern Finland.

Environment Minister Lashes Out at Arrogant Mining COmpanies | Mining the Indigenous North | Scoop.it
Minister of the Environment Ville Niinistö (Green) is accusing mining companies of arrogance. In his view the worst problems affecting mining in Finland could have been averted with the right technology.
“Very many product development companies have been in touch and said that there are solutions to these specific problems in the mining industry. Many of the mining companies have been so arrogant that they have not taken environmental planning as an important consideration.”

Niinistö also says that foreign companies are operating in Finnish Lapland, which have not respected the rule of law.
“There has been unauthorised drilling and other things”, Niinistö says

Sweden: Saami communities protest against iron ore mining on their reindeer herding grounds

Saami communities protest against mining on their lands in the Kalix River Valley

Community press release

19 September 2011

The Saami communities of Girjas and Laevas say no to exploration and mining proposed by Kiruna Iron AB along the Kalix River Valley. The Saami communities have declared in an initial meeting with the company that they do not accept exploration or mining on their traditional lands and that the consequences of such activities would be devastating for the environment and Saami land uses.

Kiruna Iron AB, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Australian listed Scandinavian Resources Ltd, plan to apply for planning permission for two mines - one for Ruovdenjunnji/Ekströmsberg and one for Rakkurijokki.

Talvivaara: Environmental Disaster in Finland

UPDATE 22/11/2012: Talvivaara spill goes on! New leackage found in safety dam!

Since November 4, 2012[1] a cocktail of poisonous chemicals leaked from the Talvivaara mine in Eastern Finland to the surrounding rivers and lakes. An investigation of the Finnish Environment Institute found high levels of aluminium, cadmium, nickel, uranium and zinc in the released waste waters. In a big demonstration led by people from Eastern Finland on November 14, 2012 about 1,000 people demanded to close the mine. A petition with some 18,000 signatures[2] was handed over to the Minister of Environment.[3] The number of signatures is still increasing - as of November 18 about 20,000 people signed the petition[4]. At the same time a small rally took place in Oulu.

Only during the first day of the disaster, over 220,000 cubic metres of waste water have leaked from a gypsum waste pond at the Talvivaara mine in Kainuu. Some of the water has spilled to an area outside the mine.[5] Since that day the leakage continued for at least ten days. The operator of the mine tried for weeks to close the leak[6]. On November 8 they announced to have blocked a leak at its gypsum pond. Only half a day later a new leakage was reported.[6] The same happened again with the "all-clear" message of November 14th, when it was announced again the leakage was eventually blocked - one week later the safety dam was reported to leak again[7]. It is estimated that over 10,000 kilos of nickel and unknown amounts of uranium escaped the mine[6].

In a 14-page decision released today, the appellate court said it lacked jurisdiction in the case but that it still affirmed a state district court decision in May to dismiss the case.
Nancy Langston's insight:

Very important update--the MN Chamber had tried to have the courts throw out the MN "wild rice standard" limiting sulfates, which is designed to protect waters from toxics that could harm wild rice. The court ruled against the Chamber and the 10 ppm limit stands.

Kauko Myllykoski is angry. After retiring four years ago he moved with his wife from Espoo to his childhood home in Mellajärvi in Ylitornio.
When the two settled down, prospectors of the French company Areva appeared in the area, expressing interest in uranium deposits there.
The test drilling revealed that there was gold under the ground. Instead of Areva, the Canadian company Mawson Resources is now prospecting in the area.
