Are you are going to pick up running in the new year or train to race?  Running is new for me this year and I am going to train to do a 1/2 marathon.  Now for me to go from hobby to sport,  I will need to know what I am doing in order to know where to improve.  Best place to start is with the basics.

Effortless running takes some effort—and other lessons learned by a chronically injured runner at an alternative running school.
ozziegontang's insight:

Running like Life can be done gracefully or clumsily. Go for the grace:   GAPO

Danny and I go back to the mid-90's when we first met on rec.running. I was supportive of his ideas around ChiRunning. Like Danny I had taken up Tai Chi in 1981 with Master Liang in Balboa Park.  My thinking was that running was full body movement.  If I wanted to go faster, then it made sense to have synchronized movement with the entire body for each step be it a mile or a marathon.

As the image shows, the maiden on the unicycle has minimal body movement up and down.  The only thing moving up and down are her legs.  Running is in a way marching in place and allowing the body from the ankle to fall forward.

You may want to look at the concepts of Nicholas Romanov and POSE Method (posetech.com) or Natural Running with Danny Abshire at NewtonRunning.com.
