The title of this Scoop are the words of an 11-year old boy who had just completed a mindfulness training program offered by his school.

I think it's fair to say that most teachers and parents would prefer a child learn early on how to keep calm during intense situations.  But how can we teach our children mindfulness?

(1) Practice mindfulness yourself.  You cannot teach what you do not know.

(2) Your children will benefit from your mindfulness practice, whether you teach it to them or not.

(3) Teach your child in a way that resonates with them personally.

(4) Unlike older children, younger children need a "prop" to help them focus on their breath.

(5) Don't force it; mindfulness should never be a punishment.

Teachers should be the first to be trained in Mindfulness techniques. A mindful teacher would probably be more successful to teach a class to be attentive, aware, mindful. I am a teacher and a teacher of mindfulness too, lets start with ourselves and then the kids. Kids are naturally born aware.

This elementary school teacher teaches her young students about mindfulness, using their feet. When the kids appear restless or sleepy, she has the children stand tall and push their feet into the floor in a way that no one else would notice. The children continue to stand in silence for one moment with their hand on their bellies. This grounding exercise helps the children connect with and calm their minds and bodies.

Blair Kettle's curator insight, November 9, 2013 2:06 AM

A great book to read to get broader insight into brain plasticity and the growing body of science behind it is The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science by Norman Doidge. Mindfulness meditation and other psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy are proving to be powerful tools for reshaping thinking processes and, it seems, the entire range of cognitive function.

Neurologist V.S. Ramachandran (and others) have made significant contributions to brain plasticity research knowledge through his work with amputees. His March 2007 TED talk is highly worth the 23 minutes it takes to watch it. http://www.ted.com/talks/vilayanur_ramachandran_on_your_mind.html
