His dark prediction about the future has become our present.
Buddha talking to the people of Kalama told them to be skeptical of all those who come and say they have the truth or use their authority, knowledge, wisdom to persuade others that they hold the truth. Read the Kalama Sutra. He ends up by saying:
"However, after thorough observation, investigation, analysis and reflection, when you find that anything agrees with reason and your experience, and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, and of the world at large; accept only that as true, and shape your life in accordance with it; and live up to it."

As some say it's the only nation many pledge allegiance to. If things are going to be better tomorrow it also means they are good today.
Letting go and falling away are interesting concepts. To Charlie Brown's question may be another question: Is happiness a series of incidents that allow me to see how present I am in dealing with each one. Maybe best to look at happiness as a practice.
