How Other People and Outside Objects Control Your Thoughts (and what to do about it) -

How Other People and Outside Objects Control Your Thoughts (and what to do about it) - | Mindful | Scoop.it

This moment of choice is the supposed gateway to personal freedom. You are not a slave to your environment. You can choose your response. Or so the saying goes.

Scientists at SFSU would beg to differ. They claim the outside environment can determine your thoughts automatically. Like it or not. How did they come to such a conclusion?

craig daniels's insight:

Thousands of thoughts are popping in and popping out of our mind everyday, yet we are unaware of most of them. Often out thoughts let us know they are there through things like tension in our bodies, trouble concentrating or anger.

The more we practice mindfulness the more we will become aware of this stream of think and be able to avoid attaching to it and to the sensations accompanying them.

Cultivating Spontaneous Moments of Mindfulness

Cultivating Spontaneous Moments of Mindfulness | Mindful | Scoop.it
One of the first issues that you’ll need to deal with in your meditation practice is the tendency for your attention to jump from object to object, all by itself.

You sit down to meditate with the intention of keeping your attention focused on the breath, and what happens?

Your attention stays with the breath for a few moments, and then jumps to another sensation, such as the sound of the garbage truck rumbling down your street.

craig daniels's insight:

Who knew paying attention was so hard. When I first started getting into mindfulness I was amazed at how often my mind wandered to thoughts that were totally what I didn't want to think about.

After practicing for a while I learned an important tip, what ever you think is not important, when you think just come back to your attention.

Some excellent points are made in the article about meditation.

@ivon_ehd1

Christi Krug's curator insight, February 27, 11:25 AM

I'd agree with all of these, with the caveat that anything that resembles thinking - #9 and #11 - can be done outside the meditation sit. Sitting in meditation and having a meditative lifestyle go hand and hand - but don't try to do all mindful practices in a single sit!

For many decisions, letting your mind wander to a choice that you feel drawn to rather than weighing all the optionss ample.
