Can You Learn Mindfulness From A Dog or Cat?

Can You Learn Mindfulness From A Dog or Cat? | Mindful | Scoop.it
Personal HealthIs Mindfulness the Latest Fad? Are the Benefits Too Good to Be True? Would you be skeptical if I told you that without taking a pill or seeing a therapist, you could lower your bloo...

"Dogs are great practitioners of mindfulness, according to Jonathan Kaplan, PhD"

"Besides being nonjudgmental (dogs think their owners are great no matter what kind of bad hair day they are having), dogs live only in the present moment"

craig daniels's insight:

There are teachers all around us that can help us get a handle on living a mindful life. In this post from AARP Carole Carson shares with us a number of ways to bring mindfulness into our life and reduce stress and tension in our lives.

Carson suggests we spend some time watching a dog go through its day and we'll see how they live in the moment. If you don't have a pet you can pick up a number of books like Full Catastrophe Living.

Learning mindfulness is probably much simpler than you think, in fact you already know how to be mindful you just need to be reminded.... Watch your neighbor's cat.

NATIONAL MEDITATION MONTH « Trisha Faye | Mindful | Scoop.it

"Meditation has been proven to: Relieve stress, Improve mental clarity and memory, Reduce heart rate, Lower blood pressure, Reduce muscle tension, and Enhance..." Elesa Commerse at www.thedeepcalm.com

There are still a few pockets of dissenters scattered around the globe who think meditation is either a cult or a plot to destroy traditional religion but most researchers and people who know something about mediation know the only threat it poses is to unclear thinking.

For those still wondering what the heck meditation is I offer "jogging." That's right jogging, meditation is merely an exercise for the mind just as jogging is exercise for the body. Pretty simple right?  Check it out during this National Month of Meditation, you won't be disappointed and you won't be whisked away into some subterranean cult...

30 Seconds To De-Stress

30 Seconds To De-Stress | Mindful | Scoop.it
Part of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and other mainstream Mindfulness-Based programs, is a simple practice called STOP, for 'Stop, Take a Breath, Observe, Proceed.'

"it is most helpful to anchor your STOP practice into an existing habit. Best is a habit you engage in often throughout the day, e.g. washing your hands, going to the bathroom, checking emails, getting on the phone, getting up, sitting down, etc. The idea is for you to practice STOP each time after engaging in your chosen habit. For instance, after grabbing my phone to check messages, I stop and go through the whole STOP sequence, then resume and tap the green icon. "

craig daniels's insight:

Finding a simple technique that can help us to become calmer and more focused is like finding a spring when we are thirsty. Like a spring quench our thirst just when it's needed this easy to remember technique is quenches our body and mind and reliefs us of much stress.

I can remember a number of years back how another short exercise helped me to de-stress in 30 seconds, it worked so well that I shared it with dozens of people.

The exercise consisted of putting a couple of dozen small colored dots around the house or office. When I would see a dot I would stop for just a second or so and take a deep breath and remind myself to smile and than go back to what I was doing. It worked great just like the above technique does.

Tips for Type As who can’t meditate

Tips for Type As who can’t meditate | Mindful | Scoop.it

"It’s no secret what mindfulness meditation can do to fight anxiety, but some folks can’t tame their mind for all the oms in the world – or so they think..."

A mediation practice is a cumulative exercise and you'll find you get better at it the more you do it. You don't need to worry about some esoteric concepts as you ease into your practice, just sit in a comfortable position for fifteen or twenty minutes and breathe.

Tomorrow and next weeks meditative sessions will take care of them selves, you only need to sit and breathe today.
