My trusty Honda has gone paws up.
True Mark Alisandre's insight:

Like how you honor your Honda..I have a '93 Accord with over 260,000 miles that's been back and forth to S. CA. 2x, and east to Philly once. It had a momentous collapse though on this last trip into San Diego on I-8W, and came to a standstill on a desolated area, 30 miles from the nearest Firestone where I have an account. Well, after much deliberation, I did replace the timing belt, & some valves, & Thank God made it back to AR.

I too am preparing to unload, and get a more gas-economical vehicle, but this one's been through so much with me..interesting how you can grow attached to a piece of metal on four rubber wheels. The Happy Motoring slogan was used by Esso back in the 50"s and it is unfortunate that many of us have forgotten to enjoy our drives, and see them as way too utilitarian. Several sites on the Internet giving driver training do play that up, and guarantee their students fear free / happy driving adventures. Let's join on the venturing aspect of driving, and let go of seeing it as a purely mechanistic experience. Hey, cars do have personalities too -- check out some of the car advertisements: Audi, BMW, etc.

Twitter / andjeladrago: Why do I always find myself ...

Why do I always find myself driving around wilmette beach at this time of night? #peaceful http://t.co/3ucAVQeMVn
True Mark Alisandre's insight:

Having a peaceful drive was what relaxed my former wife, and one of my best friends says: "I feel completely peaceful while driving!" This is from a guy who travels at the ungodly speed of 75 - 85! I, myself found a cross country drive at 50 - 55 mph is amazingly soothing, almost to the point that I hardly seem to be moving -- everyone else zooming past me at 20 - 30 mph past that!

I would suggest that besides driving around eating lots of gas, we could also entertain the idea of a nice strutt with our butts, and receive the neuromuscular exercise we so much need in our sedentary society. A beautiful motto I came up with for our family went like this: Peace Alone Is Guiding Us Mysteriously Home. As we drive or walk, we could tune into the Inner Teacher (Holy Spirit in Christian terminology) and ask for inspirational guidance in our lives. It really works!!

Driving up turnbull and watching the sunset is so peaceful  http://t.co/7apoU3XRyc
True Mark Alisandre's insight:

Having a moment of nature appreciation while driving awakens us to the human spirit that can move us more and more of the time rather then being stimulated by the impulses. I find that "maintaining my lane," and refraining from zipping in and out of traffice to get a few car lengths down the road, makes my drives a whole lot more enjoyable. Also, just recently I've been experimenting with broadening my awareness to a 360 degree bubble around my car and noticing just how this affects my state of  mind and feelings. It's actually quite pleasant. I have "Peaceful Driving Quickies" for stress prevention and creative enhancement for any reader who'd like one. Respond to this post!!

"Every winter the hazards of driving in snow and icy conditions are noted, but rarely is walking on snow and ice addressed," Martin B.
True Mark Alisandre's insight:

Yes, we all need more moment to moment awareness of how we are moving & breathing. Even if you are a smoker, you can add MOVEMENT AWARENESS to your smoke break, and enhance your  health. Each time we increase our awareness in one area of our life, it automatically spreads to all other areas, thereby improving our (and societies) whole human condition!!

Wake Up & Drive!

Wake Up & Drive! | Mindful Driving | Scoop.it
True Mark Alisandre's insight:

Since Arkansas' legislature recently refused to pass a law prohibiting texting, I assume we licensed drivers in this state will have the self discipline to mindfully focus on the road, and wait to send that important text till we're 'out of the metal chariot!' As judge Jim Adams back in Philly stated: 'No one has a right to drive a car, it is a priviledge. If you drive irresponsibly, I can take that priviledge away!'

We, being mature, civilized human beings can begin to practice using our cars just as mindfully, and courteously as we wheel our shopping carts around in the grocery or department stores. We probably need to be a little bit more 'down to earth' though, cause some shoppers are out there in la la land! We are moving a darn sight slower though, and not in a dad blamed hurry. By the way, the above was a slogan for Mitsubishi some years back, and really inspired me, just as the Audi commercial did - WE HELP YOU PREVENT WHITE KNUCKLE SYNDROME WITH OUR STATE OF THE ART STEERING SYSTEM! Get with me for your inspiring "breathing practice" from my book on a laminated 3 X 5 card to help you drive stress free & easily. Respond to this post.
