Soldiers dressed in full Army Dress Blues filled the front seats of Mountain View High School graduation ceremony on June 7, 2014; a unique sight, even for a city located just outside a military installation. As Lluvia Loeza’s name was called, the Soldiers rose to their feet and rendered a salute.

Nice to see nationwide programs coming together discussing best practices and delivery methods to reach especially those military families that do not live near military installations. The coming together of public and private programs to ensure our youth have the best resources to be resilient citizens. The STEM education approach utilizing the talents of Military members and spouses is what I am hoping to do with the Mil Fam STEM night I am coordinating in the Spring on Ft. Riley.

I have known a number of military families who have used this free service from tutor.com/military. Any topic, any time for anonomous help. One family had a student with health problems preventing in person attendance at school and tutor.com/military filled the gap with the needed instruction to complete the take-home work. Other's might just need explaination of a particular math problem.

My friend Sandy Risberg created this eBook.  It is a great reference for any teacher.  There are military connected kids in nearly every school in the Nation.  But if you live near a military base, and are a teacher, you absolutley need this FREE book.  LOts of great resource and ideas for how to deal with the kids of military families.

This is such an important point that is often overlooked by administration when setting up professional development and instituting change for teachers. Think of the flight attendant who states in emergency situations that you should put the oxygen on yourself first so you can better help those around you. This article addresses exactly that issue. In the times of great change, like the implementation of new standards, teachers are going through great change and need the social/emotional supports, just as we offer our students going through transitions.

The Student 2 Student program  (created by Military Child Education Coalition) is a student led program that helps integrate new students to a school, usually prevelent in highly military connected schools, however, S2S members are both military and civilian students.
